Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Olivia Bennett

The following morning broke over Chicago in a sheath of cold, gray ice.
Downstairs in the lobby of the Carter Grand Meridian, the media presence had tripled. Every news network in North America had picked up the story. The morning business anchors on CNBC were analyzing the plunge in Carter Global stock, while the gossip blogs were dissecting every frame of the viral video from The Grand Oak.
Inside the penthouse, however, an eerie calm had settled.
Dr. Hayes had spent the early morning examining Lucas and Ethan, while Sophie sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows, happily munching on blueberry pancakes that Sebastian had personally ordered from the hotel’s executive chef.
Sebastian hadn't slept a wink. He had spent the entire night in the adjacent executive study, surrounded by six corporate forensic investigators, three former federal prosecutors, and Marcus, his head of private security.
At 10:00 AM, the study doors opened.
Sebastian walked into the dining area. He had showered and shaved, wearing a clean, perfectly tailored charcoal suit, but the shadows beneath his eyes spoke of a man who had stared into an abyss.
“Hannah,” he said quietly. “Step in here for a moment.”
I nodded to Maya, who had arrived under armed escort at sunrise to watch the kids, and followed Sebastian into the study.
The room looked like a war room.
Four large monitors on the wall displayed bank routing numbers, wire transfers, and scanned medical records from five years ago. On the center desk sat a stack of red-labeled legal folders.
“Julian Vance broke two hours ago,” Sebastian said, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk. “My investigators found his offshore shell company in Belize. He was facing thirty years for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit medical kidnapping. He signed a full state’s evidence proffer with the Cook County State’s Attorney.”
I felt a shiver run down my spine. “Medical kidnapping?”
“That’s what it was, Hannah,” Sebastian said, his voice tightening. “When you went into labor at County General, Vance didn't just deliver divorce papers. He filed a fraudulent emergency protection order claiming the Carter estate had full temporary guardianship of the infants due to maternal incapacitation. Then, Olivia had the children placed in a private nursery under false surnames for forty-eight hours while they tried to find an illegal international adoption broker in South America.”
I gasped, my hand flying to my throat. “What? They tried to sell my babies?”
“They weren't trying to sell them for money,” Sebastian said, his eyes burning with disgust. “They were trying to make them vanish. The only reason the plan failed was because you checked yourself out of the hospital against medical advice, walked into the neonatal unit with your discharge papers, and literally carried all three of them out the back exit before Vance’s transport team arrived.”
Tears burned the corners of my eyes as the memory crashed over me.
I remembered that night. The agony of my stitches, the blinding dizziness of my blood loss, the cold rain soaking my thin coat as I pushed a triple plastic bassinet past the security desk, terrified that the strange men in suits hovering in the lobby were coming to take them. My mother’s intuition had saved their lives five years ago, long before I ever understood the monstrous machinery working against me.
“Olivia realized you had escaped,” Sebastian continued, his voice dropping into a lethal murmur. “She knew that if she pursued you legally, the police would investigate the fraudulent guardianship order. So she told my mother that you had abandoned the babies and that they had died of respiratory distress in the county incubator. My mother... God forgive her... believed it because she wanted to believe it. She erased the records to protect the family name.”
“And now?” I asked, looking at the monitors displaying Olivia’s face next to a series of federal indictment drafts. “What does she do now?”
“She’s desperate,” Sebastian replied. “An hour ago, Senator Bennett held a press conference outside his campaign headquarters. He claimed the viral video was a deepfake smear campaign funded by political opponents. He announced that the merger gala tonight will proceed as planned, and that Olivia will be formally introduced as the new Vice Chair of the Carter-Bennett Foundation.”
I stared at him, incredulous. “After everything that came out yesterday? They’re still pretending nothing happened?”
“They don't have a choice,” Sebastian said with a cold, humorless smile. “The Bennett family has leveraged every single asset they own against this merger. If the merger fails tonight, their credit lines collapse by midnight. The Senator will be bankrupt, and Olivia will be an indigent felon by next week.”
He walked over to me, stopping only inches away.
For the first time in twenty-four hours, the terrifying, untouchable CEO vanished. In his eyes was the man I had fallen in love with in that tiny culinary kitchen in Cicero—the man who had looked at me as if I were the only light in a very dark world.
“Hannah,” he said softly, lifting a hand to gently cup my cheek. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, his touch warm and reverent. “I don't have the right to ask anything of you. I failed you. I failed our children in the most unforgivable way a man can fail his family.”
“Sebastian...”
“Let me finish,” he pleaded, his voice cracking. “I know I can't buy back five years. I know that a thousand apologies won't erase the cold nights you spent in that basement, or the terror of raising three infants alone. But tonight... I need you to stand beside me. Not as my wife. Not as my partner. But as the mother of the Carter heirs.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box.
He didn't open it. He just held it out in his open palm.

“The press thinks you are an extortionist,” Sebastian whispered. “Olivia thinks you are a coward who will run away into the shadows like you did five years ago. Let’s show the world who Hannah Miller really is.”
