Chapter 8 - The Raid at High Noon

While Mom was rushed to the cardiac intensive care unit, Detective Miller didn't waste a single second.
With the video footage from my house and the empty Digoxin vials in police custody, an emergency magistrate signed warrants for Jason Vance, Tanya Vance, and Carl Higgins for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit elder fraud, extortion, and practicing illegal notarization under duress.
Miller placed two armed deputies outside Mom’s hospital room door.
"Nobody goes in without my personal sign-off, Sarah," Miller assured me in the hospital waiting room, handing me a paper cup of warm tea. "Your mom is stabilized. The doctors flushed the excess digitalis out of her system. She’s going to survive."
I sat in the plastic hospital chair, staring at the tea, my whole body shaking from the crash of adrenaline. "What about the people Jason owed? The loan sharks?"
Miller smiled—a cold, predatory smile that belonged to a seasoned detective about to spring a trap.
"Higgins doesn't know Jason is in custody," Miller said quietly. "Jason’s phone has been blowing up for the last hour with texts from Tanya Vance asking where the signed deed is. We have Jason’s phone. We told her to meet at the county clerk’s office at 11:30 a.m. to finalize the filing before the noon deadline."
"You’re going to ambush them?"
"We’re taking down the whole rotten nest," Miller said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Stay here with your mom. Tyler is still safe with Mrs. Gable. By the time you take Tyler home tonight, this nightmare will be over."
At 11:30 a.m., outside the county municipal building downtown, an unmarked van sat idling across from the stone steps.
Through the tinted glass, Detective Miller and four undercover officers watched as a black town car pulled up to the curb. A woman with shoulder-length dark hair and an expensive leather jacket stepped out, carrying a slim leather portfolio.
Tanya Vance.
She pulled out her phone, checking a text message that Miller’s team had sent from Jason’s phone: *I’m sitting on the bench inside the lobby. I have the papers.*
Tanya pushed through the heavy revolving doors of the municipal building.
The moment she stepped onto the marble floor of the lobby, four undercover detectives closed the distance from all sides.
"Tanya Vance?" Miller stepped forward, flashing his gold shield. "Police. Don't touch that bag."
Tanya froze, her hand instinctively reaching for her waistband, but two officers grabbed her arms, pinning her against the marble pillar before she could flinch.
Inside her leather portfolio were three sets of pre-notarized transfer documents, already bearing fraudulent notary stamps, awaiting only Mom’s forged deed to execute an immediate hard-money lien on the family estate.
Twenty minutes later, armed with Tanya’s unlocked phone and full cooperation in exchange for dodging an attempted murder accessory charge, the state police raided Carl Higgins’s law office on the east side of the city.
They didn't just find legal documents.
They found ledger books detailing millions of dollars in predatory loans, illegal gambling markers, and the names of dozens of elderly victims whose homes had been stripped away by Higgins and the Rossi syndicate through forced signatures and manufactured deaths.
By 2:00 p.m., the local news channels were flashing "BREAKING NEWS" banners across the screen:
**MASSIVE ELDER FRAUD AND PREDATORY LOAN RING BUSTED IN DOWNTOWN RAID; LOCAL ATTORNEY AND ASSOCIATES IN CUSTODY.**
Jason was facing twenty-five years to life for attempted murder and conspiracy.
His gambling debts wouldn't be paid by my mother’s house.
