Chapter 7 - The Auction on Park Avenue

At 2:30 on a warm Thursday afternoon in late July, the circular driveway of the luxury high-rise at 740 Park Avenue was packed with commercial moving vans, private art transport trucks, and dozens of curious Upper East Side socialites holding auction catalogs.

A massive yellow banner hung across the limestone entryway:

PUBLIC JUDICIAL FORECLOSURE & FORFEITURE AUCTION — BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES MARSHALS SERVICE.

Inside the five-thousand-square-foot duplex penthouse where Grant had once planned to live with his mistress, the rooms were stripped down to the bare floorboards.

The custom Italian chandeliers had been tagged with red federal property barcodes; the grand piano in the salon had an inventory sticker on the fallboard; and the master dressing room—where Sienna Vale’s designer wraps and leather pants had once hung—was an empty expanse of white shelving and dust shadows.

Standing near the marble foyer console, wearing an unbuttoned civilian linen shirt and dark trousers, holding an unread cup of black coffee, was Callum Prescott.

Beside him stood Detective Sarah Jenkins, the lead investigator from the federal task force.

"The total liquidation yields seventeen point four million dollars, Mr. Prescott," Detective Jenkins reported, reviewing her digital clipboard. "Every dollar has been transferred to the federal restitution fund. The remaining personal effects—the watches, the luxury vehicles, the private wine collection—will be cleared by five o'clock."

Footsteps moved softly across the bare marble behind them.

Lena walked into the foyer, carrying six-month-old Julian in her arms.

The baby was magnificent: robust, chubby-cheeked, wearing a tiny navy sailor's romper, his clear, intelligent slate-gray eyes wide with fascinated wonder as he looked at the high ceilings, his small hands grasping a wooden teething ring that Callum had carved for him out of white cedar.

Callum turned around.

The cold, lethal posture he maintained in boardrooms melted in an instant, his face breaking into that rare, brilliant smile that belonged only to this mother and child.

He walked across the foyer, reaching out his large, warm hands, lifting the baby from Lena’s arms with that effortless, seasoned gentleness that had become their daily rhythm.

"How is the young sovereign today?" Callum murmured, tapping the tip of Julian's nose, laughing softly as the baby let out a loud, ringing bubble of pure joy that echoed off the empty walls.

"He told me in the car that he prefers the house in Rhinebeck, Callum," Lena smiled, stepping up beside him, resting her hand comfortably on his forearm. "He said this penthouse has bad acoustics."

Callum looked around the empty, cavernous apartment—the apartment where his brother had spent months calculating how to destroy the woman standing beside him.

"Your son has impeccable taste, Lena," Callum said softly.

He looked down at her, his eyes serious, deep, and luminous with an unshakeable, sacred devotion.

"The deed to this building was purchased by the foundation this morning at the auction step," Callum told her. "I had Arthur file the conversion covenants."

Lena looked at him, surprised. "You bought the penthouse?"

"The foundation bought it," Callum corrected gently. "It is being completely gutted next week. Converted into an eighteen-bed private pediatric recovery center for mothers and infants undergoing high-risk cardiac surgeries at Mount Sinai. Funded in perpetuity by the liquidated assets of Grant Prescott and Sienna Vale."

Lena felt a sweet, warm tear slip from her lash line, tracking down her cheek, but she didn't wipe it away.

She looked at the empty room where cruelty had once plotted its empire.

The cruelty was dead.

The vanity was burned to ash.

And in its place... was sanctuary.

"A good foundation, Callum," Lena whispered, leaning her head gently against his broad shoulder.

May you like

"The only kind that lasts, Lena," Callum replied, his arm sliding securely around her waist, pulling her and the baby flush against his broad chest.

"Built on solid rock."
