Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

"Step back from the room, Mr. Sterling," Deputy Walker said, stepping firmly between Caleb and the doorway, his chest armor bumping Caleb back into the hall. "Your thirty minutes are up. You’ve got your bag. Time to go."

Caleb didn't move his eyes from Maya’s hands. "That book is private corporate property. It belongs to Vanguard Horizon. Maya, as an attorney, you know damn well that seizing privileged client files without a warrant is grounds for disbarment."

Maya closed the ledger with a soft, decisive snap that sounded like a gunshot in the silent room. She stood up, smoothing the front of her wool trousers, and smiled with all the warmth of a surgical blade.

"I am Nora’s legal counsel, Caleb. And this residence is marital property currently under an exclusive possession order granted by a superior court judge. Anything found unsecured inside the marital structure during an eviction proceeding is subject to immediate legal inventory to prevent the spoliation of marital assets. But please—" Maya took two slow steps toward him, holding the book loosely against her side "—feel free to file a bar complaint. I’ll be delighted to show this book to the State Bar, the Georgia Real Estate Commission, and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service."

Caleb’s throat bobbed. A bead of sweat formed at his hairline, tracking slowly down his temple.

"Nora," he said, turning his gaze back to me, trying one last, desperate appeal. "Think about our children. Think about what this will do to the family name."

"Our children are twenty-four and twenty-two, Caleb," I said, rising to my feet, my voice shaking with a fury so pure it felt like electricity. "Julian is in law school in Chicago. Chloe is finishing her residency in Nashville. They are grown adults who will survive knowing their father is a thief. But they will never, *ever* have to watch their mother let herself be destroyed to protect your fragile ego."

"I did this for us!" Caleb yelled, his voice cracking, the facade breaking wide open. "Your father treated me like an errand boy for twenty years! He held those office parks over my head like a carrot on a stick! I gave you a mansion, I gave you country clubs, I built this life, and you think you’re just entitled to sit on your daddy’s trust while I do all the heavy lifting?"

"Get out," I said.

"Nora—"

"Get out of my house!" I screamed, the sound tearing from the deepest chamber of my chest.

Deputy Walker didn't wait for another word. He grabbed Caleb by the upper arm, spun him around with practiced, effortless torque, and propelled him down the long hallway toward the front door. Caleb stumbled, shouting curses that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, his expensive leather loafers scuffing against the polished marble.

The front door slammed shut. The deadbolt clicked into place.

Through the tall sidelight windows, I watched Deputy Walker escort Caleb down the flagstone path. Caleb tossed his duffel bag into the trunk of his Porsche, slammed the hood, and turned around to look at the house one last time.

He didn't look defeated.

He looked furious. He turned his head toward Tessa’s house, pulled his phone from his pocket, pressed it to his ear, and then climbed into the driver’s seat. The engine roared to life with an aggressive snarl, the tires kicking up wet mulch as he backed out of the driveway and sped away down Magnolia Ridge.

Silence fell over the house. A heavy, suffocating silence.

I stood in the center of the foyer, looking at the grand staircase, the crystal chandelier, the family portraits lining the walls. Twenty-one years of framed memories: trips to Tuscany, Julian’s high school graduation, Chloe holding her acceptance letter, Caleb and I standing on the stern of a sailboat in the Virgin Islands, his arm wrapped around me, the sun setting behind us.

It was all poison. Every frame was an artifact from a crime scene.

"We have work to do," Maya said gently, coming up behind me and resting a hand on my shoulder. "We have ninety-six hours before the banks close for the weekend. We need to freeze every domestic and offshore account tied to Vanguard Horizon before Caleb gets to a branch in Nassau or Zurich."

"How do we freeze an offshore account without a federal indictment?" I asked, wiping cold sweat from my forehead.

Maya held up the burner phone inside the evidence bag.

May you like

"We don't freeze the accounts," Maya smiled grimly. "We freeze the transactions. Caleb has an accomplice inside the title company that was handling the fraudulent sale of your father’s office parks. And this little phone is going to tell us exactly who he's been paying off."
