Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Mistress

The rhythmic, violent slamming against the heavy oak door shuddered through the entire room. The steel frame groaned, dust sifting down from the ceiling acoustic tiles, but Arthur’s hydraulic wedge held fast. The teeth had sunk half an inch into the concrete subfloor; the door would not yield unless they brought an emergency demolition saw from a fire truck.

"Deputy! Break this door down!" Bradley Sterling’s voice shrieked from the hallway. "This is a direct violation of a court order! Break it down now!"

"Mr. Sterling, step back!" the lead marshal shouted back, his voice strained. "The frame is reinforced! We need building maintenance to override the magnetic fire seals!"

I stood in the center of the room, my arm raised, pointing my finger directly at the television mounted on the wall above Hannah’s empty bed.

The digital clock on the screen ticked to 6:00:00 AM.

The cheerful, synthesized brass fanfare of the Channel 4 Morning News cut abruptly through the sound of the pounding boots outside.

The standard opening graphic—a sunny vista of the downtown skyline with the daily traffic report—did not appear.

Instead, the screen cut instantly to Sarah Lin, sitting behind the anchor desk under harsh, high-contrast breaking news lights. She wasn't smiling. Her hair was pulled back tightly, and a stack of unformatted legal documents lay scattered across the desk before her.

*"Good morning. We are interrupting our regular programming with an unprecedented breaking news report involving an alleged attempted double homicide, massive corporate racketeering, and systemic judicial corruption within our county family court system."*

Outside the door, the rhythmic pounding suddenly stuttered.

I heard Evelyn’s voice, sharp and high-pitched: *"What is that? Turn that down! Deputy, keep hitting the door!"*

*"Moments ago,"* Sarah Lin’s voice projected with crystal clarity from the TV speakers, *"Channel 4 News received verified, cryptographically authenticated 4K surveillance footage from a private system installed at the residence of Eleanor Mercer. The footage we are about to show you contains graphic scenes of an infant and a mother in extreme peril. Viewer discretion is urgently advised."*

The television screen cut to the pristine, wide-angle feed from Arthur’s garage eave.

The resolution was so sharp you could see the heat waves shimmering off the asphalt of my driveway. You could see the exact time stamp: *12:51:14 PM*.
