Chapter 7 - The Ambush

Gideon picked up the receiver on the second ring. "Speak."

The voice on the other end was frantic, the sound of revving engines and shouts bleeding through the speaker. "Mr. Sterling, it's the east perimeter. Douglas Palmer just pulled up with three black SUVs, a private security detail, and two uniformed county sheriff deputies. They have an emergency writ of habeas corpus for the children signed by Judge Holbrook an hour ago. They're demanding immediate entry."

My blood ran ice cold. "Toby," I gasped, leaping to my feet. "Maisie!"

"Hold them at the outer gate," Gideon commanded the guard, slamming the phone down. He grabbed his coat from the chair. "Eleanor told me Holbrook might try a midnight maneuver before our fraud filing hit the clerk's docket. Douglas is trying to seize the children under cover of darkness so he can ship them to his mother’s ranch in Wyoming by morning."

We sprinted out of the library, down the grand staircase, and out the front doors into the freezing mountain night.

The carriage house was already awake. Through the living room window, I saw Mrs. Gable standing in front of Toby and Maisie, holding an iron fire poker in her two white-knuckled hands. Toby had his little arms wrapped around Maisie, his small face pale with terror as the headlights from Douglas’s convoy bathed the stone walls in harsh white light.

At the main gate, iron bars groaned as Douglas’s lead SUV pressed against them.

Douglas was standing outside the vehicle in a heavy shearling coat, screaming at Gideon’s security guards. Beside him stood two armed deputies with holstered sidearms, holding clipboards, looking deeply uncomfortable.

"Open this damn gate!" Douglas roared, his voice bouncing off the granite walls of the estate. "I have a court order from Judge Holbrook! My wife is an unfit vagrant harboring my children on private property! If you don't open this gate in thirty seconds, I will have these deputies arrest every single one of you for felony interference with child custody!"

"Step away from the gate, Douglas," Gideon’s voice sliced through the cold night air like a guillotine.

Gideon walked into the glare of the headlights, his hands in his pockets, his posture relaxed and utterly terrifying. I followed him, stopping beside him, my eyes locked on the man I had once loved.

Douglas sneered, pointing a gloved finger at me through the iron bars. "There she is! Look at her, deputies! Living like a kept woman while my children are dragged from pillar to post! Clara, pack their bags right now, or you will leave here in handcuffs!"

"Show me the order, Deputy," Gideon said calmly, completely ignoring Douglas.

One of the deputies, a burly man with graying hair, stepped forward and held the paper through the bars. "Mr. Sterling, we don't want any trouble. But Judge Holbrook signed this emergency order at 11:15 PM based on allegations of immediate endangerment."

"That order is void," a sharp, aristocratic voice announced from behind us.

Eleanor Vance strode down the gravel driveway, wearing boots and an overcoat, holding a tablet displaying a live video call.

"Deputy Miller, I suggest you look at your dispatch terminal before you commit a federal civil rights violation," Eleanor said, holding the screen up to the gate. "Fifteen minutes ago, the Colorado Court of Appeals issued an emergency stay on all orders originating from Judge Holbrook’s division, pending an active misconduct investigation by the Judicial Discipline Commission."

Douglas’s sneer vanished. "What? That's impossible! Vance, what are you talking about?"

"Judge Holbrook’s hunting lodge in Whitefish, Montana," Eleanor said with a wicked smile, "was purchased two years ago by *Apex Horizon Ltd.* The same shell company you used to launder funds from Palmer-Sterling Capital. The Chief Justice has already transferred all custody and civil matters regarding the Palmer family to the Denver District Court en banc."

Deputy Miller looked from Eleanor to Douglas, his face hardening. He pulled his hands away from the iron bars and stepped back toward his patrol cruiser. "Mr. Palmer, this order isn't valid. You told me the appeals division had cleared this."

"They didn't!" Douglas shrieked, panic cracking his voice. "He’s Gideon Sterling! He’s using his money to manipulate the courts! Arrest them! I pay your taxes!"

"Get in your truck, Mr. Palmer," Deputy Miller said coldly, resting a hand on his duty belt. "Now. Before I cite you for disturbing the peace and filing a false emergency petition."

Douglas turned on me, his eyes wild, spitting venom through the bars. "You think you've won, Clara? You think this is over? You are nothing without me! You'll never get a dime! I will burn the company to the ground before I let you have a penny!"

"You didn't build that company, Douglas," I said, stepping right up to the iron gate, looking directly into his twisted, pathetic face. "My father’s life insurance policy built it. And my children will never spend another night terrified of your footsteps."

Douglas raised a fist as if to strike the bars, but the deputies grabbed his arms, shoving him back toward his SUV.

As the convoy turned around and sped down the dark mountain road, their taillights fading into the mist, the silence of Cherry Hills settled over us once more. I turned and ran to the carriage house, collapsing onto the rug and pulling Toby and Maisie into my arms, weeping tears of pure, fierce triumph.
