Chapter 9 - A New Chapter

The autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of gold and amber, blanketing the suburban streets of Dublin in a picturesque tapestry of change. Two months had passed since the courtroom gavel fell, sealing the shortest marriage in Ohio legal history.

My life had returned to its peaceful, perfectly ordered rhythm. The house was quiet, secure, and entirely mine. The smart-home security system had been upgraded with biometric locks, ensuring that no uninvited guests would ever darken my doorstep again.

On a crisp Saturday morning, I was sitting at my dining room table, reviewing quarterly investment reports and sipping my coffee, when the doorbell chimed softly.

I looked at the security monitor on the wall.

It wasn't Tyler. It wasn't Daniel.

Standing on my front porch was a tall, distinguished-looking man in his late fifties with kind eyes, silver hair, and a warm, genuine smile. He was wearing a tweed jacket, carrying a small potted bonsai tree in his hands.

It was Marcus Vance—an old friend from my manufacturing days, a retired structural engineer whom I hadn't seen in over ten years, ever since he relocated to Seattle following his own wife's passing.

I pressed the intercom button. "Marcus? What on earth are you doing in Dublin?"

Marcus looked up at the camera, his smile widening. "Good morning, Maggie. I heard a rumor through mutual friends that you were recently single, fiercely independent, and in desperate need of someone who knows how to fix a leaking roof without drafting a corporate merger."

I couldn't help the genuine, unforced laugh that bubbled up from my chest.

I walked over to the front door, unlocked it, and pulled it wide open. The morning breeze rushed into the foyer, carrying the fresh scent of autumn and brand-new beginnings.

"Well, Marcus," I said, stepping aside and gesturing for him to enter. "You picked a good time to visit. But fair warning: my background check standards are exceptionally high these days."

Marcus chuckled, stepping across the threshold and handing me the potted bonsai tree. "I wouldn't expect anything less, Maggie. Show me the contracts."
