Chapter 9 - The Rinaldi Vows

December arrived in the Hudson Valley with a vengeance, blanketing the Rinaldi estate in three feet of pristine, glittering snow. The grand stone mansion looked like something out of a gothic fairy tale, its tall windows glowing warmly against the freezing twilight, smoke curling lazily from the massive stone chimneys.

Inside the grand ballroom, however, the atmosphere was anything but freezing.

The cavernous room had been transformed. Thousands of white fairy lights draped across the exposed wooden beams, casting a magical, golden glow across polished mahogany floors, cascading floral arrangements of winter roses and evergreen branches, and a gathering of approximately fifty guests.

These weren't politicians or corporate executives. They were Sebastian’s inner circle—loyal captains, regional associates, trusted security personnel, and a few select federal officials who understood the delicate balance of power in the Hudson Valley.

And standing near the grand stone fireplace, wearing a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo with silver-streaked hair neatly combed back, was Sebastian Rinaldi.

He looked terrifyingly handsome, utterly commanding, and completely out of his element.

“Stop fidgeting, Boss,” Daniel whispered loudly from the front row, adjusting his own black bowtie with a smirk. “You’re going to put a hole in the hardwood floor.”

Sebastian shot Daniel a withering, lethal glare that would have made a syndicate hitman wet his pants, causing Daniel to instantly zip his lips and stare intently at his shoes.

The string quartet stationed in the corner struck up the opening notes of Pachelbel’s Canon in D.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slowly swung open.

A collective hush fell over the room.

I walked down the long aisle, wearing a sleek, elegant ivory silk gown that hugged my silhouette, my hair swept up into soft curls with a delicate silver vine woven through the strands. In my hand, I carried a simple bouquet of winter lilies.

And walking proudly right beside me, wearing a custom black satin bowtie clipped securely around his thick neck, was Atlas.

The massive Cane Corso trotted with dignified grace, acting as the ultimate, terrifying ring-bearer, his dark eyes scanning the crowd with calm, protective authority before delivering us safely to the altar.

Sebastian’s breath caught.

As I reached the front of the room, Atlas calmly sat down beside Sebastian’s polished leather shoes, letting out a contented huff.

Sebastian stepped forward, taking my hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and entirely grounding.

“You look...” Sebastian started, his voice thick with unsaid emotion, trailing off as he shook his head, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his face. “Words fail me, Emma.”

“Good,” I whispered, my eyes shining with happy tears. “You talk too much anyway.”

The aging local judge officiating the ceremony cleared his throat, smiling warmly before beginning the traditional vows. But neither of us was listening to the scripted words. We were listening to the silent, undeniable promise we had made to each other the day we met at the train station.

When it came time for the rings, Atlas proudly trotted forward with a small velvet pouch attached to his collar. Sebastian unclipped it, pulling out a heavy platinum band encrusted with dark, glittering diamonds.

He took my left hand, sliding the ring onto my finger with infinite care.

“I, Sebastian Rinaldi,” he spoke clearly, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the silent ballroom, “take you, Emma Caldwell, to be my anchor, my equal, and my absolute priority. I vow to protect you, to stand beside you against any storm, and to love you for the rest of my days.”

My voice didn't shake when I slid my ring onto his finger.

“I, Emma Caldwell,” I whispered, looking straight into his dark, fathomless eyes, “take you, Sebastian Rinaldi, to be my sanctuary, my partner, and my home. I vow to stand in the dark with you, to fight by your side, and to love you without reservation, for the rest of my life.”

“By the power vested in me,” the judge smiled, “I now pronounce you man and wife. Sebastian, you may kiss your bride.”

Sebastian didn't wait for permission.

He pulled me flush against his chest, wrapping his arms around my waist, and his lips met mine in a deep, fierce, intoxicating kiss that made the entire ballroom erupt into thunderous applause and cheers.

Atlas let out a joyful, booming bark that echoed off the high rafters, celebrating our union in his own unique, deafening way.

As Sebastian pulled back slightly, resting his forehead against mine, I looked out over the crowded ballroom filled with flickering fairy lights, loyal friends, and safety.

The running was over.

The box was empty.

May you like

And I was home.
