Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in Broad Daylight

The name hung in the air like a poisoned blade.

Caleb staggered back half a step, hitting the edge of the credenza. "Tessa? Claire... what are you talking about? Tessa is just a designer! She’s a neighbor!"

I didn't answer him. Instead, I reached into my briefcase and pulled out an eight-by-ten glossy photograph.

I slid it across the glass table.

It stopped right in front of him.

The photograph showed Caleb on our living room couch at 11:58 p.m. on Monday night. His arm wrapped around Tessa Vance. Her cheek on his shoulder. Her hand flat against his chest beneath my mother’s quilt.

Caleb looked at the image. His pupils dilated until his eyes were almost entirely black.

"You..." His voice cracked. "You... were there?"

"I stood in the doorway for twelve minutes, Caleb," I said, my voice cutting through him like an icy wind. "I watched you breathe against her hair. I watched you shift to hold her tighter. And then I went outside, called my attorney, and spent the last four days cataloging every lie you have ever told me."

"Claire, please—" He dropped to his knees beside my chair, reaching out desperately to grab my coat, but the investigator standing behind Maya stepped forward, placing a heavy, restraining hand on his shoulder.

"Mr. Mercer, keep your hands to yourself," the investigator warned.

"Claire, it was a mistake!" Caleb began to babble, tears springing to his eyes, the pathetic unraveling of a narcissist whose mirror had shattered. "I swear to God, it meant nothing! She was lonely! She was crying about her life! We had some wine and I fell asleep! Nothing happened! I swear on my life nothing happened!"

"You used her birthday as the combination to your safe, Caleb."

The babbling stopped instantly.

Caleb’s jaw went slack. A look of pure, unadulterated terror settled over his features.

"I read your alternate ledger," I continued, leaning down toward him. "I read your private emails. I know about the penthouse on River Street. I know about the uncontested divorce petition you had drafted. I know you called me heartless. I know you thought I was just an auditor who lived in spreadsheets."

Maya opened her folder and slid a fresh legal document across the table toward Caleb.

"This is a summons for divorce on the grounds of marital misconduct, financial fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty," Maya announced. "We have simultaneously filed an emergency lis pendens against every property owned by Vanguard Crest and Lapis & Oak. The County Prosecutor’s office has already frozen the escrow accounts."

The door to the boardroom opened again.

A young associate from Higgins’ firm stepped in, looking nervous. "Mr. Higgins? There’s a woman in the lobby. A Ms. Tessa Vance. She’s demanding to speak with Mr. Mercer."

"Send her in," I said before Higgins could reply.

Ten seconds later, Tessa burst into the boardroom, soaked from the rain, her mascara smudged, her hair wild.

"Caleb! You aren't answering your phone! The bank called—they said our operational accounts are locked! What is going on—"

She stopped dead in her tracks.

She saw the investigators. She saw Maya. She saw Mark Higgins staring down at his legal pads in disgust. And then she saw Caleb, kneeling on the carpet like a broken beggar, staring at the photograph of them lying on the table.

Tessa looked at me.

I sat back in my chair, crossed my legs, and raised an eyebrow.

"Welcome to the closing, Tessa," I said.

Tessa looked at Caleb, her panic transforming into vicious, spitting rage. "You said she didn't know! You swore she was going to sign the release today! You told me everything was under control!"

"Shut up, Tessa!" Caleb screamed, scrambling to his feet, his handsome face twisted into an ugly, desperate mask. "Shut your mouth!"

"You ruined me!" Tessa shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at him. "You used my LLC to hide the money! You told me it was legally bulletproof! You swore your wife was an idiot who wouldn't look past the front page!"

"Both of you, be quiet," the county investigator commanded, stepping between them. "Ms. Vance, you are being served with a deposition subpoena regarding the commercial transactions of Lapis & Oak. I suggest you retain counsel immediately."

Tessa backed toward the doorway, her eyes darting like a trapped animal’s. "I didn't forge anything! Caleb did all the paperwork! Caleb took the money from their joint accounts! He told me she approved it! I’m a victim here!"

Caleb lunged toward her. "You took forty-five thousand dollars for your personal debts, you lying bitch!"

The investigators grabbed Caleb, forcing him against the credenza.

I stood up. I smoothed the lapels of my trench coat, picked up my leather briefcase, and turned to Maya.

"Maya, do you need anything else from me today?"

"No, Claire," Maya smiled, a cold, glorious smile of absolute professional satisfaction. "We have everything. You can go home."

I looked at Caleb one last time. He was pinned against the mahogany furniture, his suit rumpled, his hair in his face, tears of humiliation and rage streaming down his cheeks.

"Claire!" he sobbed, his voice echoing through the boardroom. "Claire, please! Don't do this! We can fix this! I love you! Claire!"

I didn't say a word. I didn't offer an insult, an explanation, or a backward glance.

May you like

I turned and walked out of the boardroom into the quiet, carpeted corridor, leaving them to tear each other apart in the ruins of the empire they had tried to build on my grave.
