Chapter 41 - Confrontation at the Altar of Greed

The chatter in the grand ballroom died down like a suffocating flame the moment our heels clicked against the polished parquet floor.

At the far end of the hall, on a raised dais beneath an oil painting of the Iris crest, stood Victor Sterling—Vance's ruthless uncle, the man who had pulled the strings behind my ex-husband’s legal assaults. Beside him, dressed in an ostentatious silver gown, stood a woman whose face I had not seen in five long years.

My mother. Eleanor Campbell.

She looked entirely unchanged: cold, immaculate, her posture as rigid as granite. She held a champagne glass in her manicured hand, but as her gaze locked onto mine, the glass slipped, shattering violently against the marble floor.

"Rachel?" Eleanor’s voice was a brittle rasp that cut through the room.

"Good evening, Mother," I spoke clearly, my voice carrying with absolute authority across the silent hall. "You look surprised to see me. Did you expect me to burn in the nursery like Father was supposed to thirty years ago?"

The crowd murmured in shock, turning toward Victor Sterling, whose jaw was set in venomous rage.

"You have no business here, girl," Victor sneered, stepping to the front of the dais. "This is a closed shareholder assembly. Escort these trespassers out!"

Four armed private guards stepped forward, but Vance immediately stepped in front of me, drawing a silver federal badge and a legal warrant from his breast coat.

"Anyone who takes a step forward will be charged with federal treason and conspiracy to defraud maritime trusts," Vance commanded, his voice thunderous. "This assembly is unauthorized. The Sterling trust is void."

"On what grounds?" Victor roared. "Eleanor holds the proxy of the Campbell estate!"

"She holds a forgery," I declared, unrolling the high-resolution legal copy of the charter deed retrieved from Chloe's locket. "The Campbell trust was established under maritime common law. It cannot be signed by a spouse. It transfers exclusively through the maternal line to the firstborn child of the direct descendant. That child is Chloe Campbell. And as her sole legal custodian—recognized by the final divorce decree granted in open court—I hereby dissolve the Iris Syndicate."

Eleanor stumbled backward, clutching Victor's arm. "Rachel... you don't know what you're doing. That money protects this family!"

"That money destroyed this family!" I shouted, tears of righteous fury stinging my eyes. "You tried to take my baby from my arms in court to feed your greed! You let Father burn! You sold your own daughter to a syndicate of thieves!"

I looked at Madison, who gave the signal into her discreet wrist transmitter.

Instantly, the grand glass doors of the hall burst open. Federal agents, backed by armed marshals, flooded the perimeter.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!"
