Chapter 6 - The Digital Counterstrike

By 2:00 PM, the local news cycle had caught the scent of blood.
A sensationalized Facebook post Brenda had made earlier that morning—claiming that the police were "finally investigating the real criminal on Maplecrest Lane"—had blown up into a local social media firestorm. A minor local independent news blog, *The Valley Vanguard*, had even run a clickbait headline: *Suburban Neighborhood in Turmoil: Accusations of Thefts, Feuds, and Retaliation on Maplecrest.*
Brenda had tagged three regional news channels in the comments, trying desperately to turn public opinion into a weapon that could pressure the district attorney into dropping the charges against Brett.
She wanted a digital war.
She wanted the internet to destroy me.
I sat at my desk, Chloe sitting beside me on a kitchen stool, drinking iced tea and watching my screen.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Maya?" Chloe asked softly. "Once you put this out there, there's no taking it back. The whole town is going to see it."
"They've spent three days calling me a vindictive, crazy monster who hates children and destroys families," I said, clicking the timeline editor in my video rendering software. "Brenda’s Facebook post has nine hundred shares. My consulting firm received two anonymous emails this morning asking if they were aware they employed a 'harasser.' They aren't just attacking my yard, Chloe. They are trying to obliterate my livelihood."
"Then hit them," Chloe said, her eyes flashing with sisterly loyalty. "Hit them with everything you have."
I hit *Render*.
Ten minutes later, the file was ready. It wasn't an emotional rant. It wasn't a tearful plea for understanding. It was a cold, forensic, documentary-grade takedown, meticulously edited with clear graphics, time-stamps, and audio transcripts.
I titled the post: **The Truth About the Maplecrest "Barbecue": An Anatomy of a Burglary.**
I posted it directly into the *Maplecrest Community Watch & Chat* group, tagged the neighborhood moderators, and uploaded a high-definition mirror to YouTube, linking it in the comments of Brenda’s viral post.
The video opened with the high-resolution footage from the Fourth of July:
First, the timestamp showing me pulling out of my driveway at 6:00 AM on July 3rd with my packed luggage.
Next, Brenda’s text message to me: *"Hope you're having fun!"* accompanied by the accidental screenshot showing fifty strangers rampaging through my flowerbeds.
Then came the raw, uninterrupted audio of my phone calls being instantly blocked.
Then the screen transitioned to black, with large white text: **3:12 PM – THE "PARTY" AS A SMOKESCREEN.**
The footage cut to Camera 4—the forgotten eaves camera.
In vivid, crisp 4K color, Brett Holloway was seen walking down the side passage, glancing over his shoulder with a furtive, predatory look. The audio captured the distinct, violent metallic crunch as he forced the forty-inch crowbar into the deadbolt casing of my garage.
The video zoomed in on his face as he muttered to himself: *"Stupid b***h should've locked it tighter. This mower's gonna cover the whole tax bill."*
The footage showed him wheeling the commercial riding mower into his yard, then returning to haul my grandfather’s two heavy, green-painted tool crates out of the side door, grunting under their weight.
Next was the footage of Brenda on the porch shouting at the officers that Brett "had permission," juxtaposed directly with the footage of Brett breaking the lock with a crowbar.
Then came the climax of the video: last night's surveillance.
Camera 1 captured Wayne Holloway walking to the corner of my garage at 2:15 AM, pulling the stolen transit authority tools from his jacket, shoving them under my foundation, and sliding the forged pawn ticket with my forged signature into the side pocket.
The video ended with a high-resolution screenshot of the official police press release issued thirty minutes prior by the Valley Police Department:
*ARREST WARRANT ISSUED: Wayne Holloway wanted for Evidence Tampering, Grand Larceny, and Framing of a Victim. Brett Holloway taken back into custody for bail violation and criminal conspiracy.*
I clicked *Publish*.
For thirty seconds, nothing happened.
Then, the notifications started.
It wasn't a trickle. It was an avalanche.
*Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding-ding-ding-ding.*
The comments on the neighborhood group exploded like a row of firecrackers:
*Sarah Jenkins:* "OH MY GOD. I feel sick. We defended him! He literally broke into her garage with a crowbar!"
*Dave Miller:* "Wait, he stole her grandfather’s tools and then his brother tried to frame her with stolen transit gear?! What kind of sociopaths are living next to us?!"
*Karen Vance:* "Brenda lied to all of us! She told us Maya gave permission for the barbecue! She invited thirty people from out of town and charged twenty dollars a head for the brisket! She used Maya's yard to make money!"
*Marcus Brody:* "Look at the timestamp on that crowbar! He planned this before she even left town! This is sickening. Maya, on behalf of the sane people on this block, we are so, so sorry."
Within two hours, the video had thirty thousand views. Brenda’s original post was drowned out by thousands of furious comments calling her out for fraud, perjury, and harassment. The moderators of the neighborhood group pinned my video to the top of the page and issued a formal statement revoking Brenda Holloway’s membership permanently.
Down on the street, the atmosphere shifted instantly.
I walked to my living room window. Across the street, Mrs. Gable was out on her porch, sweeping her steps. When she saw me through the glass, she stopped, pressed her hand to her heart, and gave me a deep, apologetic bow of her head.
A moment later, two black squad cars pulled silently into the Holloway driveway.
This time, there was no crowd to defend them. There were no outraged neighbors yelling at the police.
The officers walked up the steps, kicked the front door open when no one answered, and emerged five minutes later leading Brett Holloway in fresh leg irons and handcuffs. Behind them, Brenda was being led out by a female deputy, sobbing hysterically, her hands cuffed behind her back, charged as an accessory after the fact and for filing a false police report.

As they were loaded into separate cruisers, the cul-de-sac was completely silent, except for the quiet, rhythmic clicking of my security cameras archiving the end of their reign of terror.
