Chapter 15 - The Turncoat’s Confession

By dawn, the Rhode Island State Police and two federal investigators from the Department of Justice were crammed into my living room.

The intruder, identified as Gregory Holt, had already cracked under interrogation. Facing twenty years for aggravated burglary, armed home invasion, and corporate espionage, Holt had rolled on his employer within forty minutes of reaching the barracks.

Karen sat beside me on the sofa, drinking steaming tea, while Detective Miller of the State Police read through the preliminary transcript of Holt's confession.

"Holt admits that Vance ordered him to extract Clara's encrypted drives," Detective Miller said, rubbing his tired eyes. "Vance knew that Elena’s legal team was going to subpoena Julian Mercer as a hostile witness next Tuesday. But there’s something worse."

"What?" Karen asked, leaning forward.

"Julian Mercer didn't sign those legal affidavits voluntarily," Miller revealed, looking directly at me. "Vance’s fixers visited Julian at the federal facility three weeks ago. They told Julian that if he didn't sign the forty-million-dollar lawsuit against Clara and perjure himself about the corporate ledgers, Vance would release evidence tying Julian to an unsolved corporate homicide in Zurich from six years ago."

The room went dead silent.

"Julian was terrified," I murmured, recalling the trembling hands and pale skin I had seen on Julian during his final days in our house. "He wasn't an evil mastermind. He was an arrogant coward who got trapped in a cage with a monster."

"Vance owns judges, politicians, and private security armies," Karen said darkly. "If Holt's confession goes public before the indictments are secured, Vance will liquidate his domestic entities and flee on his private Gulfstream to Dubai."

"Then we don't let it go public," I said, standing up. "We don't give Vance the chance to run."

"Clara, the federal prosecutors need weeks to build a RICO case against Vance," Detective Miller warned. "Vance has resources you can't imagine."

"They don't need weeks," I replied, walking over to my desk and pulling out a leather-bound journal. "Julian kept one secret safe deposit box that Vance never found. He used my social security number as the secondary key. Julian thought he was using me to hide his secrets, but he forgot that I memorize every document I ever touch."

I looked at Karen. "Julian’s box is at the Providence National Bank on Westminster Street. In it is the hardware security key to Arthur Vance’s private offshore clearing account. If we walk into court on Tuesday with Elena Vance, we won't just defeat their motion to dismiss. We will take Arthur Vance’s entire empire from under his feet before lunch."

Karen stood up, her eyes blazing with triumphant resolve. "Get your coat, Clara. We have a bank vault to open."
