Chapter 6 - A Desperate Ambush

The rain began to fall in heavy, slate-gray sheets as my towncar pulled up to the curb outside Mercer Capital. News trucks were already circling the block like vultures; the rumors of the morning’s boardroom coup had leaked to the financial press, and Bloomberg was already running the ticker: *MERCER CAPITAL IN TURMOIL: GRANT MERCER OUSTED BY WIFE*.
As my chauffeur opened the rear door and held a wide black umbrella over my head, a shrill scream cut through the rumble of the rain and traffic.
"Vivian! Vivian, look at me!"
Chloe burst through the barrier of paparazzi, her trench coat open, her hair plastered to her skull by the downpour. She looked completely unhinged. She lunged toward me, her manicured fingers clawing through the air as if she intended to rip my coat from my shoulders.
Two of my security guards instantly stepped between us, their broad frames forming an impassable wall.
"Get off me! Let me speak to her!" Chloe shrieked, struggling violently against the guards' grip. Cameras flashed in rapid, blinding succession, capturing every frame of her degradation. "You ruined everything! You took my home! You took my life! You think you’ve won because your grandfather had money? You’re pathetic! You couldn't even keep your husband in your bed for seven years!"
The press leaned forward, microphones thrust over the velvet stanchions, hanging on every word.
I didn't run. I didn't hide behind my umbrella.
I stepped around the security guard, stopping precisely three feet away from her. The rain beat against the silk umbrella above me, but not a drop touched my face. I looked down at Chloe, whose designer heels were ruined by street sludge, whose expensive mascara ran in dirty black streaks down her cheeks.
"Chloe," I said, my voice carry clearly over the whir of camera shutters. "You are screaming in the rain over a man who gave you a stolen apartment and an embezzled future."
"He loves me!" she sobbed, though the venom in her voice was curdling into sheer panic. "He promised we would be in Switzerland by tomorrow!"
"He lied to you," I said calmly. "Just as he lied to me for seven years. Did he tell you that the Swiss accounts require my personal biometric authorization to release a single cent? Did he tell you that every offshore entity he placed in your name carries joint and several liability under federal racketeering statutes?"
Chloe stopped thrashing. Her jaw dropped, her breath catching in her throat.
"You signed the nominee documents, didn't you, Chloe?" I asked, tilting my head slightly. "Grant told you it was a gift of love. But when the Department of Justice unseals the indictment on Monday, your name is on the top of the signatory page. Grant didn't make you a queen. He made you his human shield."
She stared at me in horror, the realization hitting her like physical blow. The cameras flashed endlessly, immortalizing her terror.

"Turn around, Chloe," I whispered. "And ask yourself where your savior is right now."
