Chapter 6 - The Poison Pill Awakens

Saturday morning arrived with an unnatural quiet across the Gold Coast.
Daniel did not come home from the benefit. Marcus Vance’s team confirmed that he had spent the night at the Lake Shore Drive penthouse with Vanessa, frantically holding conference calls with their banking contacts and legal representatives until four in the morning.
At 10:00 AM, Claire sat in Samuel Reed’s conference room. The large mahogany table was covered in red-labeled binders, bank affidavits, and court-stamped emergency petitions.
Alongside Samuel sat Elena Rostova, Chicago’s most lethal forensic matrimonial attorney—a woman known in the Cook County circuit as “The Guillotine.”
“Daniel’s attorney, Richard Sterling, reached out to my office two hours ago,” Elena said, sliding a thick document across to Claire. “He believes he has caught us off guard. He wants to execute an emergency pre-filing settlement before the courts open on Monday. He is attempting to force a binding arbitration agreement.”
Claire looked down at the document. It was a masterpiece of extortion.
Daniel was demanding:
1. Complete, unencumbered ownership of Whitmore Vanguard, including the Naperville land parcels and development rights.
2. The transfer of the Whitmore Grand Hotel to an independent holding entity under Daniel’s sole control.
3. A forty-five-million-dollar cash equalization payment to be disbursed from the Whitmore Family Trust over thirty-six months.
4. Vanessa Hart’s retention as permanent executive vice president with an ironclad golden parachute worth twelve million dollars.
In exchange, Daniel would surrender his claims to the primary residential real estate, resign as CEO of Whitmore Properties, and agree to a mutual non-disparagement clause.
“He actually thinks I will sign this,” Claire said softly.
“He is desperate,” Samuel explained, tapping his fountain pen against the table. “Julian Vance’s comments at Symphony Hall spread through the financial community like wildfire last night. Two of the three junior lenders backing Aura Media pulled their commitment letters before breakfast this morning. Daniel needs this settlement signed today so he can present it to the banks on Monday morning as proof that he controls the assets.”
“And if I don’t sign?”
“He threatens to file a public complaint on Monday accusing you of corporate interference, alleging that you are using family influence to destroy shareholder value out of marital jealousy,” Elena said with a cold, predatory smile. “He believes the threat of public scandal will force you to settle.”
“He still thinks I care about the scandal,” Claire murmured. She looked out the window at the Chicago skyline. For thirteen years, she had protected Daniel’s reputation. She had smoothed over his explosive temper with department heads, covered his strategic mistakes with her grandfather’s capital, and allowed him to take the public credit for projects she had spent months designing.
She had protected him because she believed in the sacred covenant of marriage.
But the man she had loved did not exist. In his place was an arrogant, reckless thief who had brought a mistress into her family’s house and tried to strip the foundation out from under her feet.
“Let’s schedule the mediation,” Claire said, turning back to Elena and Samuel.
Elena frowned slightly. “Claire, if we go to mediation today, we are giving him a platform. We have the legal firepower to freeze his accounts by Monday afternoon via an ex-parte injunction.”
“No,” Claire said, her voice dropping into an icy, unshakeable register. “If we freeze his accounts through an injunction, he will play the victim. He will run to the press, claim old-money sabotage, and drag this through appellate courts for three years. I don’t want him wounded, Elena. I want him extinguished.”
Samuel leaned forward, his old eyes gleaming with fierce pride. “Section Fourteen-B?”
“Section Fourteen-B,” Claire confirmed. “We accept the emergency mediation for three o'clock this afternoon. Tell Sterling that I am willing to sign away every single asset Daniel requested—on one condition.”
Elena arched an eyebrow. “What condition?”
“That Daniel Cross and Vanessa Hart appear in person, and that Daniel personally signs the full indemnification and assumption of debt schedule without exception.”
Elena’s face broke into a slow, terrifying smile. “You want him to guarantee the liabilities before he discovers that the assets are hollow.”

“He wants to be a visionary,” Claire said, standing up. “Let him own the cost of his vision.”
