Chapter 4 - The Blueprint of a Secret

The third-floor private library of the Bennett estate was a sanctuary of dark mahogany shelves, leather-bound classics, and a massive arched window overlooking the moonlit gardens below. It was the only room in the house that Evelyn hadn't managed to "modernize" with beige upholstery and glass tables, mostly because Richard’s grandfather had spent his final years reading there.

It was also Clara’s favorite place in the world.

She pushed open the heavy oak door, flicking on a single reading lamp that cast a warm, golden glow across the Persian rug. Alexander stepped in behind her, carrying the heavy box of books with effortless ease, setting it down gently on the large mahogany reading table in the center of the room.

"You didn't have to carry that," Clara said quietly, keeping a safe distance as she nervously twisted the silver ring on her thumb. "If Evelyn or my father see you up here with me—"

"Let them look," Alexander interrupted, turning around to face her. He walked over to the towering shelves, running his fingers along the spines of the books. "This house... I've been reviewing your father's portfolio for three weeks, Clara. But nobody mentioned this room in the architectural floor plans."

"It's not part of the commercial assessment," Clara explained, relaxing just a fraction as she watched him inspect the library. "My grandfather built this wing. When Evelyn took over, she tried to turn it into a storage room for old banquet linens, but I fought her for it. I told her if she touched my grandfather's books, I'd donate her entire designer shoe collection to a thrift store."

A low, rich chuckle rumbled in Alexander’s chest. He turned his head, a genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. "You threatened Evelyn's Louboutins? I'm beginning to think you have a dangerous streak, Clara Bennett."

"Only when provoked," she replied softly, a faint smile touching her own lips.

For the first time all evening, Clara allowed herself really look at him. Up close, without the stifling pressure of the receiving line or Vanessa's clawing desperation, Alexander Grant felt less like an untouchable billionaire and more like a man carrying an invisible weight. There was a subtle tension in his shoulders, a wariness in his eyes that suggested he spent his entire life surrounded by people who wanted something from him.

Except for her. She didn't want his money, his development contracts, or his social standing. She didn't even know who he was until three hours ago when Evelyn started hyperventilating over his arrival.

"Why are you hiding up here, Clara?" Alexander asked quietly, stepping closer to the table. His hazel eyes searched her face, cutting through her defenses with unnerving accuracy. "And don't tell me it's because you're busy. I saw the look on your stepmother's face when she talked about you. I saw the invisible fence they put around your life."

Clara looked down at her scuffed brown boots, a sudden wave of defensive pride rising in her chest. She had spent years swallowing her humiliation, but having a billionaire point it out felt entirely different. It felt raw.

"My family has a brand to protect, Mr. Grant," she said bitterly, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Vanessa is the face of the Bennett Hotel Group. I'm... well, I'm the inconvenient draft they forgot to delete."

"Alexander," he corrected gently.

Clara looked up. "What?"

"My name is Alexander. Not Mr. Grant." He closed the distance between them until he was standing just a foot away, tall and solid and impossibly close. "And as for your family's brand... I think they're building their entire empire on a foundation of sand. They just don't know it yet."

Before Clara could process the cryptic warning, the heavy oak door of the library swung open with a sharp click.

"Alexander! There you are!" Vanessa’s voice rang out, sharp and breathless as she swept into the room, her eyes darting between Alexander and Clara like a hawk spotting prey. Behind her stood Richard Bennett, his face dark with suppressed fury, and Evelyn, looking like she had just swallowed a lemon.

"Alexander," Richard said tightly, forcing a strained, diplomatic smile as he stepped into the sacred confines of the third-floor library. "We've been searching everywhere for you. The mayor is asking about your smart-city infrastructure proposals."

Alexander didn't blink. He didn't rush to smooth things over. He slowly turned around, his expression hardening into corporate armor as he looked at Richard Bennett.

"Tell the mayor to wait, Richard," Alexander said, his voice cold, smooth, and laced with absolute authority. "I was just getting to know the real owner of this house."
