Chapter 9 - The Groundbreaking

Six months later, the morning sun broke over the Philadelphia waterfront in a brilliant, warm cascade of gold, illuminating a massive banner strung between two steel cranes.
THE MERCER-VALE INNOVATION CORRIDOR.
A Joint Venture in Sustainable Urban Architecture.
A crowd of hundreds—mayors, urban planners, community leaders, and journalists—had gathered beneath the crisp spring sky for the official groundbreaking ceremony.
At the center of the dais stood Adrian Mercer, wearing a sharp navy suit without a tie, holding a silver-plated ceremonial shovel. But all eyes were not on the billionaire investor.
Standing beside him, wearing an impeccably tailored emerald-green linen blazer over a crisp white silk blouse, her dark brown curls falling softly around her shoulders, was Maribel.
Around her neck, the brass compass caught the morning sunlight, flashing like a tiny beacon of unshakeable truth.
“When we first began planning this corridor,” Adrian’s deep, resonant voice rang out over the microphone, carrying effortlessly across the waterfront, “the skeptics told me that smart infrastructure couldn't be built on historical foundations without compromising the integrity of the past.”
He turned his head, looking down at Maribel with a gaze so full of fierce, unreserved pride that the front row of reporters immediately raised their camera lenses.
“They were wrong,” Adrian smiled, his arm sliding naturally around Maribel’s waist, pulling her close against his side. “Because true innovation isn't about erasing history. It’s about finally letting the right architect write the blueprints.”
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
From the back of the audience, standing behind the press barrier with a camera hanging uselessly around her neck, Celeste Vale watched her sister take the microphone. She wore a simple black coat, her sunglasses hiding her eyes from the flashing cameras.
She had tried to get an invitation. She had tried to call Adrian’s office. But the gates were locked, and the world had moved on.
On the stage, Maribel stepped up to the podium. She looked out over the sparkling river, past the cranes and the steel girders, toward the bright, limitless horizon of the city skyline.
She didn't look back.
She gripped the handle of the silver shovel beside Adrian, her fingers brushing his, and together, they broke the ground.

The billionaire had asked for her by name.
And now, the entire world was shouting it back.
