Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Palisades Gate

At 11:45 on Sunday night, the winter gale that had been building over the Atlantic finally slammed into the Hudson Valley with hurricane-force gusts of sixty miles per hour.

Sheets of freezing sleet battered the heavy slate roofs of the Duca fortress, turning the four-hundred-foot cliffs into vertical waterfalls of black ice.

Inside the third-floor master suite, Elena sat on the edge of the oversized four-poster bed, wearing a dark green silk dressing gown that Vincent’s house manager had laid out for her, reading through the final executive summary for the United States Attorney.

Beside the bed, a fire of seasoned hickory logs crackled in the limestone hearth, throwing long, amber shadows across the vaulted timber ceiling.

BOOM.

The sound was not thunder.

It was the concussive, low-frequency detonation of an anti-vehicle directional thermite charge tearing through the primary electrical transformer at the bottom of the private lane.

In an instant, the chandelier lights flickered and died.

The emergency red LED backup strips along the baseboards hummed to life, bathing the bedroom in a sinister, arterial crimson glow.

Down on the ground floor, through three layers of reinforced stone, the chatter of suppressed automatic weapons erupted with terrifying, synchronized ferocity:

PFT-PFT-PFT-PFT.

"INCOMING!" Mateo’s voice boomed through the internal tactical intercom on the nightstand. "BOSS! WE HAVE THREE SQUADS OF PRIVATE CONTRACTORS BREACHING THE WESTERN CARRIAGE HOUSE! VANGUARD TACTICAL! THEY’RE USING NIGHT-VISION OPTICS AND EMP CHARGES!"

The heavy oak door of the master bedroom swung open with a violent, concussive crash.

Vincent stepped into the room.

He did not wear his three-piece suit.

He wore a black tactical plate carrier over a charcoal wool sweater, dark cargo trousers, and combat boots. In his right hand, he held a customized short-barreled Sig Sauer MCX carbine; at his hip rested his suppressed service pistol. His face was completely calm, his gray eyes blazing with that cold, predatory focus that had made him an underworld legend before he was thirty.

"Elena," Vincent commanded, crossing the room in three long strides, catching her by the elbow, hauling her gently but immovably to her feet. "To the primary vault. Now."

"No!" Elena shouted, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, the memory of Brandon's fists flashing across her mind in a sudden, blinding spike of panic. "The ledgers! The canvas binders in the library—"

"The ledgers were digitized and transferred to the Southern District’s secure cloud server forty minutes ago, Elena," Vincent said, pulling a lightweight Kevlar vest over her head, cinching the side velcro straps with two brutal, efficient pulls. "Alistair Cross knows he’s finished. This isn't an audit raid. This is an extermination strike. He sent his mercenaries to burn the house down with us inside it."

CRACK-CRACK-CRACK.

Three high-velocity rounds shattered the heavy leaded-glass casement windows of the bedroom, spraying pulverized glass and freezing sleet across the Persian rug.

A mercenary in black tactical gear and a ballistic helmet lunged through the shattered frame from the exterior stone terrace, raising an automatic shotgun.

Vincent moved with the blinding, terrifying speed of an apex predator.

He didn't take cover.

He stepped directly into the line of fire, raised his MCX carbine with his left hand, and fired three controlled semi-automatic rounds in half a second:

Double-tap to the chest plate. One to the facial visor.

The mercenary grunted, his shotgun firing wild into the ceiling plaster, his body snapping backward over the limestone balustrade, tumbling four hundred feet through the freezing gale into the black waters of the river below.

Vincent dropped the empty magazine, slapped a fresh thirty-round mag into the well with the heel of his palm, and wrapped his left arm securely around Elena’s waist, pulling her flush against his armored ribs.

"Stay behind my shoulder, Elena," Vincent whispered against her ear, his voice dropping into that subterranean, sovereign register that brooked zero argument.

"Keep your head down, hold my belt, and do not let go."

"I won't let go, Vincent," she whispered back, her fingers locking into the heavy tactical webbing of his vest with an iron grip that surprised them both.

Vincent kicked open the secondary service door leading to the stone turret staircase.

"Mateo!" Vincent spoke into his throat mic. "What is our tactical posture on the ground floor?"

"They’re in the great hall, Boss!" Mateo screamed over the deafening roar of automatic weapons fire. "Twelve shooters! Heavy body armor! They’ve deployed tear gas in the foyer!"

Vincent’s lips curved into that cold, terrifying smirk that belonged in an execution chamber.

May you like

"Tell the boys to release the gas suppression system in the cellar, Mateo," Vincent commanded softly into the microphone.

"And let's show these mercenary cowards what an old-school family looks like in the dark."
