Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Westin St. Francis was bathed in gold and ice-blue light.

Seattle’s elite—shipping magnates, tech venture capitalists, politicians, and socialites—moved across the polished marble floor beneath crystal chandeliers that mirrored the dark beauty of Elliott Bay. Champagne flowed freely, and a string quartet played softly near the grand entrance.

Yet beneath the glamour, a thick undercurrent of tension gripped the room.

Every guest had seen the viral video from Harbor House. Every guest had read the morning headlines regarding the federal investigation into Northstar Creative.

Near the elevated dais, Vanessa Ward stood surrounded by a small circle of sycophants who were growing more nervous by the minute. She wore an emerald green Givenchy gown with a plunging neckline, designed to look regal, but the strain on her face was unmistakable.

Beside her, Ryan Cole wore a custom tuxedo, but his eyes darted constantly toward the entrance like a cornered animal. His phone was dead in his pocket—he had turned it off to avoid the mounting collection calls and media inquiries.

“Relax your face, Ryan,” Vanessa hissed through a tight smile, keeping her voice low while nodding to a passing city councilor. “The press is watching us. My father has already spoken to the Port Commissioner. The city cannot afford to cancel our contract without facing a multi-million-dollar breach penalty.”

“The fraud detectives left another subpoena at my mother’s house today, Vanessa,” Ryan whispered frantically, his hand trembling as he held his champagne flute. “If Han Meridian moves forward with the metadata disclosure, we’re finished. Emily knows everything.”

“Emily is a nobody!” Vanessa snapped, her manicured nails digging into her satin clutch. “She’s an uncredited research assistant who got lucky because Daniel Han wanted to spite my father. Once the news cycle turns, Han will throw her away like yesterday’s garbage. She has no social standing, no pedigree, and no power.”

At that moment, the murmurs in the ballroom suddenly ceased.

The string quartet stumbled, two violins falling out of rhythm.

At the top of the grand marble staircase leading down into the ballroom, the double gilded doors opened.

The master of ceremonies stepped forward, cleared his throat, and announced in a voice that carried over the vast chamber:

“Announcing Mr. Daniel Han, Chief Executive Officer of Han Meridian Group... accompanied by Ms. Emily Parker, Managing Director of Han Maritime Innovation.”

A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of attendees.

Dozens of camera flashes erupted simultaneously as the media scrum at the perimeter surged against the velvet ropes.

Emily descended the staircase with Daniel at her side.

She was unrecognizable from the quiet woman who had sat alone at Table Twelve forty-eight hours earlier. She wore a bespoke obsidian silk gown with an architectural neckline that accentuated her elegant collarbones and slender frame. Her dark hair was swept into a modern, sophisticated updo, secured by a vintage sapphire hairpin—a rare piece from Daniel’s family collection.

She did not look nervous. She did not look like an assistant.

She looked like royalty.

Beside her, Daniel moved with absolute, effortless grace. His black tuxedo was immaculate, his posture radiating the cold, untouchable power of a man who owned the very ground Seattle’s elite conducted business on.

As they reached the base of the staircase, the crowd naturally parted, giving them a wide, respectful berth.

Ryan Cole froze, his champagne flute nearly slipping from his fingers. His eyes traveled over Emily—the woman he had deemed *“only meant to help until something better comes along”*—and the realization of what he had thrown away hit him like a physical blow. She outshone every woman in the room, including the desperate heiress standing beside him.

Vanessa’s face turned the color of curdled milk.

Unable to contain her rage, Vanessa pushed past her entourage and marched directly toward them, her heels clicking aggressively against the marble. Ryan hurried behind her, terrified of what she might do.

“Emily,” Vanessa sneered loudly enough to draw the attention of every reporter in the vicinity. “I’m surprised you had the audacity to show your face here tonight. Riding the coattails of your benefactor’s pity won't erase the fact that you were fired for corporate insubordination.”

The room went deathly quiet. Camera lenses zoomed in on Emily’s face.

Emily stopped. She looked at Vanessa, her expression cool, serene, and entirely unbothered.

“Miss Ward,” Emily said smoothly. “I wasn't fired. I resigned from a fraudulent enterprise before its leadership could drag my professional reputation into federal court.”

“You little thief!” Vanessa hissed, abandoning all pretense of social decorum. “You stole proprietary data from my office and handed it to Han Meridian! You’re nothing but an opportunistic secretary who couldn't accept that Ryan chose an equal instead of a dependent!”

Ryan stepped up, sweating profusely, trying to salvage the situation. “Emily, please. For your own sake, stop this spectacle. You’re embarrassing yourself in front of the entire business community. Let Daniel Han fight his own battles.”

Daniel Han stepped forward.

He didn't raise his voice, but when he spoke, the sheer weight of his presence commanded every ear in the ballroom.

“Mr. Cole,” Daniel said coldly. “Miss Parker does not fight my battles. I fight hers.”

Daniel raised one hand, signaling slightly toward the grand audiovisual screen suspended above the ballroom’s main stage—the screen Richard Ward had prepared to announce Northstar’s new executive leadership.

The promotional slides of Vanessa and Ryan suddenly flickered.

They vanished.

In their place, the massive screen illuminated with high-resolution digital evidence: banking records, encrypted emails between Ryan Cole and Vanessa Ward, and timestamped server logs displaying the systematic theft of Emily Parker’s intellectual property.

And at the very top of the screen, displayed in stark, crimson letters, was the official seal of the United States Department of Justice.
