Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Chloe Lang

The penthouse of the St. Regis was silent save for the muffled sobs coming from the master suite.
Downstairs, the grand ballroom had been evacuated by private security, but the damage was irreversible. Within forty-five minutes of Mariana’s departure, the footage captured by several high-society guests had leaked to social media.
The headline on *The Daily Chronicle* screamed across every digital screen in the country:
**VANCE DYNASTY SHATTERED: BARRON TYCOON ABANDONED PREGNANT WIFE WITH TRIPLETS, DIVORCE RETRIBUTION AT THE ALTAR.**
Ryan sat on the edge of a mahogany leather armchair, his tie ripped off, the top three buttons of his shirt undone. He held the three laminated Swiss birth certificates in his lap, staring at the names.
*Leonard. Maya. Noah.*
He traced the raised seals with his thumb. Every beat of his heart felt like a physical blow against his ribs. Three years. For three years, while he had been wining and dining Chloe, buying luxury penthouses, attending galas, and patting himself on the back for "moving on," Mariana had been carrying, birthing, and raising three infants alone.
No, not alone.
She had been with Arthur Sterling.
The door to the suite flew open, and Chloe stormed in, her makeup ruined by black streaks of waterproof mascara. She had stripped off the voluminous bridal gown and now wore an ivory silk robe, her face contorted in vicious, frantic rage.
"You ruined us!" she shrieked, hurling an antique crystal vase against the wall. It shattered into a thousand glittering shards. "You humiliated me in front of the entire eastern seaboard! My father’s partners were in that room, Ryan! The Governor was in that room!"
Ryan didn't flinch. He didn't even look up from the birth certificates. "They are my children, Chloe."
"I don't give a damn whose children they are!" she screamed, rushing toward him and grabbing his lapels, shaking him with manic force. "They are bastards from an ex-wife who played you! She planned this! She waited three years, hid them in Europe, and ambushed you on our wedding day to inflict maximum public damage! Can't you see what she is? She’s a vindictive, calculating psycho!"
Ryan slowly raised his head. His eyes were cold, hollowed out by a bottomless, aching grief.
"She didn't plan the ambush, Chloe," Ryan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "I did. The day I threw her out."
"Oh, please!" Chloe sneered, releasing his lapels and pacing the room like a caged animal. "Don't get sentimental now! You hated her! You told me she was like living with a ghost! You told me she was cold and barren and that you couldn't stand the sight of her!"
"Because I was a coward," Ryan whispered. "Because it was easier to blame her than to face the fact that our marriage was failing. And now... look at what she became without me."
"She’s Arthur Sterling’s whore!" Chloe spat, the words flying from her lips without thought. "How else do you think an unemployed art history major gets Swiss bank accounts and couture suits? She opened her legs for a dying billionaire, and now she’s using your sperm to extort both of us!"
*SLAP.*
The crack of skin meeting skin silenced the room instantly.
Ryan stood towering over Chloe, his chest heaving, his hand still suspended in the air. He had never raised a hand to a woman in his life, but the venom dripping from Chloe’s mouth had snapped the last frayed wire of his sanity.
Chloe staggered back against the marble sideboard, clutching her reddened cheek, her eyes wide with shock and terror.
"Get out," Ryan said, his voice deadly steady.
"Ryan..." she whimpered, realization suddenly crashing over her that she had pushed too far. "Ryan, I’m sorry... I’m just upset, the stress—"
"Get out of my suite," Ryan repeated. "Get out of my apartment on 72nd Street. Take whatever clothes you have there, leave the keys with the doorman, and do not contact me again."
"You can't do this to me!" Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees, clinging to his trousers. "We have a life together! The wedding... we can redo it privately! Just us! We can have our own babies, Ryan! Real babies that aren't tainted by her!"
Ryan looked down at her with pure, unadulterated revulsion. The youth and beauty that had intoxicated him three years ago now appeared paper-thin, revealing the rot underneath.
"The wedding is dead, Chloe," Ryan said, pulling his leg free from her grasp. "And if you ever speak Mariana’s name, or my children's names, again... I will make sure your father’s logistics firm loses every corporate contract it holds with my conglomerate."
He turned his back on her and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.
Behind him, Chloe gathered her dignity, her sobs hardening into a mask of pure, bitter hatred.
"You think she’s going to let you be their father?" Chloe hissed from the doorway, her voice dripping with venom. "She’s with Arthur Sterling now, Ryan. You gave up your kingdom for an empty throne. And you are going to die alone."
The heavy oak door slammed shut.
Ryan was left alone in the silence, staring out over the glittering skyline. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb hovering over a number he had deleted three years ago, but which had been burned into his memory for over a decade.
He pressed call.
The line rang once. Twice. Three times.
Then, a voice clicked on—not Mariana’s, but the measured, aristocratic baritone of Arthur Sterling.
*"Mr. Vance,"* Arthur spoke smoothly. *"I assumed you would call. If you are looking for Mariana, she is currently putting her children to bed. And if you are looking for an explanation... you will have to wait until tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. My boardroom. Don't be late. We have a great deal of business to settle regarding your family's survival."*

The line went dead.
