Chapter 9 - The Ledger of Sins

Raphael woke to the sterile smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor.

He was in a private room at Massachusetts General Hospital. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the Boston skyline in the distance. He had tubes in his chest, bandages wrapping his torso, and an IV line running into his arm.

Beside his bed, sitting in an armchair, was Beckett Holloway.

Raphael tried to move, but a spike of agony shot through his ribs. "Beckett..."

Beckett looked up from an apple he was peeling. "Don't move, boss. You had six hours of surgery to pull three pieces of shrapnel out of your lung. The doctors said if you had arrived ten minutes later, you’d be in a mausoleum."

"Where... where are they?" Raphael croaked, his throat raw from the intubation tube.

"Downstairs in the garden," Beckett said softly. He set down the knife and looked at Raphael with profound respect. "She didn't leave your side for three days straight. Clara is with them. Gideon set up three perimeters around this wing. The Moretti syndicate has been wiped out completely by the feds and our remaining crews. It’s over, Raphael. The war is done."

Raphael closed his eyes, relief washing over him like cold water. "Does she hate me, Beckett?"

"Read the table," Beckett said, nodding toward the nightstand.

On the small table sat Marin’s leather notebook. Next to it was another book—Raphael’s personal ledger, bound in black leather, which he had kept locked in his safe for four years.

"She found it in your coat pocket," Beckett said. "She read every single page."

Raphael looked at his black ledger.

Inside that book was not a record of drug shipments or extortion money. It was a daily record of his penance.

*Day 42: Rain in Boston. She has no coat. Transferred $100,000 to the Holloway foundation in case she returns.*

*Day 310: Found her old coffee mug behind the files. I cannot sleep without the lavender.*

*Day 840: Discovered Beckett’s truth. I am damned. If I find her, I will give her the entire estate and disappear.*

*Day 1,120: She was carrying my child. God have mercy on my soul.*

The door opened.

Marin walked in, holding a small paper cup of ice water. Leo walked beside her, clutching a stuffed bear Gideon had bought him from the hospital gift shop.

Beckett stood up quietly, patted his sister’s shoulder, and walked out, closing the door behind him.

Marin set the cup down on the table. She looked at Raphael, her eyes clear, the dark shadows of fear finally gone from her face.

"You kept a ledger of your sins," she said softly.

Raphael looked at her, his voice trembling. "It was the only way I could keep from pulling the trigger on myself, Marin. Knowing that somewhere, you were breathing."

Leo climbed onto the edge of the bed, carefully avoiding the bandages, and leaned against Raphael’s uninjured shoulder. "Daddy, the doctor said you have iron inside you."

Raphael froze. *Daddy.*

Tears filled Raphael’s eyes, spilling over his cheeks without shame. He lifted his left arm, wrapping it securely around his son, burying his face in the boy’s dark curls. "I have no iron left, Leo. Just love. All of it for you and your mother."
