Chapter 3 - The Puppet and the Master

The basement holding area beneath the manor’s security gatehouse was cold and sterile. Vanessa sat at a stainless steel table, handcuffed to an iron ring bolted to the floor. The ruined wedding dress had been replaced with a coarse gray jumpsuit provided by the security detail. Her makeup had run completely down her cheeks, leaving black streaks that made her look hollow and demented.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Richard entered alone.

He didn't yell. He didn't slam the door. He walked with the heavy, calculated stride of a man who had made and unmade entire corporations with a flick of his wrist. He pulled a chair opposite her and sat down.

"Vanessa," he said quietly.

She flinched at the sound of his voice, shrinking back against the metal chair. "Richard... please. I told your guards everything. I gave them the passcodes. I didn't want to hurt Emily! I swear to God, I never wanted to hurt the little girl!"

"You stood there," Richard said, his tone deceptively conversational, though his eyes burned with lethal intensity. "You watched me strike my own six-year-old child. You smiled as she cried, playing the victim, knowing that your stomach was filled with silicone and military-grade spyware. Do you know what kind of monster does that to a child?"

"I was terrified!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "You don't know Julian! He’s insane! He raised me in the shadow of our father’s suicide. Every day of my life, he reminded me that you killed our family. That your hostile takeover stripped our mother of her cancer treatments. That your fortune was built on our bones!"

"Your father was peddling falsified cardiac drugs!" Richard snarled, leaning forward, his mask of calm finally cracking. "His company was about to flood the market with lethal medication to cover their debt! I took over the company to bury the drug before it killed thousands of innocent people! Gregory Thorne took the coward's way out because he knew he was going to federal prison!"

Vanessa froze, her eyes blinking in confusion. "No... no, that’s a lie. Julian said you falsified the FDA reports to drive the stock price down so you could buy it for pennies."

"I have the original sealed audit reports in my vault," Richard said coldly. "Julian fed you a lie to turn you into a weapon. And you were stupid enough to swallow it."

Vanessa began to shake violently, realizing the foundational reality of her entire life was crumbling around her. "No... no, no..."

"Where is he, Vanessa?" Richard demanded, striking the metal table with the flat of his hand. The loud *CLANG* made her jump. "What is in that envelope he left for Emily?"

"I don't know!" she wept, pulling at the handcuffs until the metal bit into her wrists. "I swear I don't know! He never told me the full plan. He said the wedding was only Stage One. He said if I succeeded in getting the biometric keys, he would let me disappear with ten million dollars. But if I failed... if you caught on..."

"If you caught on, what?"

Vanessa looked at Richard with genuine, unadulterated horror. "He told me that if the wedding fell apart, he wouldn't need the keys anyway. Because he had already set the second half of the plan in motion two weeks ago."

Richard’s stomach dropped. "What did he do two weeks ago?"

"He didn't just target you through me," Vanessa whispered, her teeth chattering. "He found Emily's private school. He found her ballet academy. Richard... who do you think recommended that sweet new nanny you hired last month to take Emily to her afternoon classes?"

Richard’s mind spun into freefall.

*Miss Claire.*

The gentle, soft-spoken twenty-four-year-old woman with impeccable credentials who had been picking Emily up from school three days a week. The woman who had given Emily that antique music box. The woman who had spent hours alone with his daughter while Richard was away in boardrooms, planning a lavish wedding for a viper.

Richard stood up so violently his chair tipped backward, crashing onto the concrete floor.

He didn't say another word to Vanessa. He sprinted out of the holding cell, up the stone stairs, and burst into the central security control room where Marcus was coordinating sweeps.

"Marcus!" Richard roared. "Where is Claire? Where is Emily’s nanny?!"

Marcus looked up from a computer monitor, his face completely pale. "Sir... we just went to check her staff quarters in the east wing. Her room is completely empty. Her phone has been disconnected."

"And the envelope?" Richard choked out, cold sweat drenching his brow. "The black envelope Emily was holding?!"

"We ran the handwriting analysis," Marcus whispered, his hand resting near his weapon. "It’s not Julian’s handwriting, Richard."

"Then whose is it?!"

May you like

Marcus swallowed hard. "It matches the handwriting of your late wife. It matches Clara."
