Chapter 6 - Desperate Gambits

The ballroom froze into an icy, horrified silence as Grant Bennett stumbled into the open circle around the Mayor’s dais.

His tie was crooked. A dark stain of bourbon darkened his lapel. His eyes were bloodshot, bulging with a manic, unhinged fury that destroyed four years of carefully manicured PR in five seconds flat.

"Grant," Mayor Harrison said, his voice dropping into a stern, warning register. "Control yourself. This is not the venue."

"Stay out of this, Harrison!" Grant snarled, his eyes locked onto Claire. He pointed a trembling, manicured finger at her face. "You! You deceitful, conniving bitch! You faked a mental breakdown! You ran away to shithole motels, and now you show up on the arm of Roman Vance pretending to be an architect?!"

Two security guards moved to intercept him, but Roman raised a single, gloved finger.

The guards stopped instantly.

Roman stepped forward, moving with a terrifying, predator-like calm until he stood between Grant and Claire. He looked down at Grant from his towering height, his hands resting loosely at his sides. The sheer physical contrast between the two men was staggering: Grant, sweating and unraveling in his cheap arrogance; Roman, an apex predator radiating cold, lethal absolute authority.

"You are addressing my Chief Director, Mr. Bennett," Roman said, his voice quiet, conversational, and carrying the weight of a guillotine blade. "Choose your next words with extreme care. Because your life depends on them."

"She’s my wife!" Grant screamed, his voice cracking, spittle flying from his lips. "She belongs to me! Everything she draws belongs to my firm! You stole her, Vance! You’re harboring a fugitive who abandoned her marital home!"

Claire stepped out from behind Roman’s broad shoulder.

She didn't hide. She didn't seek protection. She stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the titan of Chicago, her chin lifted, her eyes piercing straight through the man who had terrorized her for forty-eight months.

"I abandoned nothing, Grant," Claire said, her voice steady and ringing like cold crystal across the silent ballroom. "You threw me from a moving car at forty miles an hour on the corner of 24th and Canal."

Gasps tore through the room. Several women covered their mouths in horror.

"That’s a lie!" Grant roared, sweat pouring down his temples. "She’s insane! She has no proof! She had an episode—she jumped!"

Claire smiled. It was a cold, pitying smile.

"Marcus," Roman said without looking back.

From the technical booth at the back of the ballroom, Marcus pressed a button on a remote tablet.

The massive multimedia screens that flanked the grand stage—screens intended to display architectural renderings of the new riverfront—flickered to life.

Every single eye in the ballroom turned toward the screens.

The high-definition municipal surveillance footage played in agonizing, crystal-clear color. The date and timestamp glowed in the corner: 11:42 PM, three nights ago.

The silver Mercedes skidding along the wet asphalt. The passenger door violently bursting open. Grant Bennett’s face illuminated by the interior dome light, twisted in an ugly, violent snarl. His hands grabbing Claire by her collar and shoving her violently into the street. The sickening roll of her body hitting the curb. Her head striking the concrete.

And then, the Mercedes accelerating away, its brake lights never once illuminating.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Chloe Davies gasped, backing away from Grant as if he were covered in plague, stumbling into the crowd and vanishing. Mayor Harrison’s face turned from mild annoyance to absolute, livid disgust.

"You monster," someone in the front row whispered.

Grant stared up at the screen, his knees trembling. The breath left his lungs in a wheezing gasp. "That... that’s fabricated. It’s an AI deepfake! Roman Vance created it to ruin me!"

"The original raw files," Victoria Cross announced, stepping forward from the legal team holding a blue-backed legal document, "were handed to the Cook County District Attorney and the Chicago Police Internal Affairs division at six o'clock this evening. A warrant for your arrest on charges of attempted vehicular homicide, aggravated domestic assault, and reckless endangerment was signed thirty minutes ago."

Sirens wailed in the distance, echoing through the heavy glass windows of the Palmer House.

Grant looked around wildly. He looked for his business partners. They turned their backs. He looked for his bankers. They looked at the floor. He looked at the Mayor. Harrison stepped away, signaling the hotel security to seal the perimeter.

Cornered, broken, and completely exposed, Grant looked back at Claire.

His eyes were filled with the pathetic, sniveling desperation of a coward stripped of his whip. "Claire... Claire, please. Think about what we built. I was stressed. The project was falling apart... You know I love you! Tell them! Tell them it was an accident!"

Claire looked down at the man she had once wept for. She remembered the taste of her own blood in the rain. She remembered his laughter echoing in the dark street.

"Nobody will ever choose you, Grant," Claire whispered, echoing his words back to him with absolute finality.

Four uniformed Chicago police officers burst through the ballroom doors, their handcuffs gleaming in the chandelier light.
