Chapter 10 - Balance Restored

The sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting a golden, amber glow across the magnificent expanse of Lake Michigan.
Down on the streets, the city rushed by in a blur of yellow cabs, bundled pedestrians, and twinkling holiday lights. The Northside Diner was packed to capacity, its neon sign glowing warmly against the winter chill, newly renovated and fully funded by a mysterious, anonymous corporate benefactor who insisted on paying off every local family's medical debt.
Inside the penthouse suite on the seventy-fifth floor, the atmosphere was quiet, peaceful, and entirely domestic.
Leah stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, wrapped in Gabriel's oversized overcoat, holding a mug of hot spiced cider.
Gabriel walked up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. She leaned into him, resting her head against his shoulder as they watched the city lights flicker to life across the freezing horizon.
"Are you happy, Leah?" Gabriel asked quietly, his breath warm against her ear.
Leah turned in his arms, wrapping her own arms around his neck, looking up into the dark, steady eyes of the man who ruled the Chicago underworld—and who had given her his entire world in return.
"I used to think life was just a ledger," Leah whispered softly, a bright, genuine smile touching her lips. "Credits and debits. Loss and survival. You give a little, you lose a lot, and you hope you don't end up in the red."
Gabriel rested his forehead against hers, his hands tightening protectively around her waist.
"And now?" he asked.
May you like
Leah reached up, her fingers tracing the warm line of his jaw, feeling the solid, living pulse beneath his skin.
"Now," she smiled, pulling him down into a long, lingering kiss that tasted like home, "the books are finally balanced."
