Chapter 18 - The Redacted Dossier

A strange silence seemed to settle over the kitchen as Sarah and I walked inside.

I picked up the receiver from the desk. "Vance."

"Colonel Vance," a voice boomed—deep, authoritative, and unmistakable. General Arthur Vance, my former commanding officer and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "I apologize for interrupting your weekend, James."

"General," I replied, standing straight instinctively. "What's happened?"

"Marcus Vance and Julian Ross entered their formal plea deals this morning," General Arthur explained, his tone heavy with an unexpected gravity. "In exchange for avoiding maximum-security federal prison, Ross turned over an encrypted black-box ledger."

Sarah stepped close to me, her hand resting on my forearm, sensing the shift in tone.

"What was on the ledger, sir?" I asked.

A pause dragged on the other end of the line—the kind of hesitation military men only exhibit when delivering devastating news.

"David didn't just build a fail-safe for that automated logistics grid, James," the General said quietly. "David was an undercover operative for Defense Intelligence."

My heart stopped.

I looked at Sarah. She was watching me, completely oblivious to what was being said, her eyes filled with gentle curiosity.

"Say that again, General," I commanded, my voice barely above a whisper.

"David was recruited six years before his death. His engineering firm was a deep-cover civilian listening post tracking foreign shell corporations laundering dirty defense money. His car crash wasn't an accident caused by corporate greed, James. It was an assassination ordered by an offshore syndicate known as *The Obsidian Group*."

The room seemed to tilt beneath my boots.

David hadn't just been an innocent civilian caught in corporate crossfire. He had been a soldier in the shadows—a man who had carried the identical burden I had carried, hiding the brutal truth from the woman he loved to keep her and their daughters safe.

"Why are you telling me this now, General?" I asked, cold dread creeping along the edges of my mind.

"Because Ross confessed to one more thing," General Arthur said, his voice dropping into grim finality. "Before David's car went off the bridge... he didn't die immediately. He handed a secondary encrypted protocol to an unknown courier. A physical safety deposit box in Geneva, Switzerland. Ross didn't know what was inside, but *Obsidian* just activated a clean-up cell in North America."

The General paused, letting the weight of his words sink in.

"James... they don't care about the engineering patents anymore. They think David left the identities of their entire international syndicate with Sarah. And they're sending their top tier."
