Chapter 10 - The New Dawn (Happy Ending)

Six months later, the spring flowers were blooming across the manicured lawns of Millennium Park, and the city of Chicago was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a Saturday afternoon.

In a sunlit, spacious backyard in a quiet, tree-lined Chicago suburb, a lively game of catch was underway.

"Think fast, Daddy!"

An eight-year-old girl with bright green eyes and a ponytail threw a bright pink softball across the grass with all her might.

Ethan Miller laughed, lunging sideways and miraculously catching the ball in his mitt just before it sailed over the patio. "Nice throw, Lily! Your pitching arm is getting dangerous!"

Lily giggled, running across the lawn toward him, chased closely by a bouncing, energetic golden retriever puppy—appropriately named *Comet*—who was barking happily and tripping over his own paws.

Sitting on a wooden patio chair nearby, watching the scene with a cup of coffee in hand, was Claire Bennett.

She wore a casual white linen sundress and sunglasses perched atop her head, looking relaxed, radiant, and deeply at peace. The corporate armor, the bespoke pantsuits, and the heavy burden of solitary empire-building were gone, replaced by the genuine, soft warmth of a woman who had finally found her home.

Ethan walked over, wiping a light sheen of sweat from his forehead, and sat down on the patio bench beside her. Comet immediately flopped down between their feet, panting happily.

Claire handed him a glass of iced lemonade, smiling affectionately. "You're letting her win, you know."

"I am not letting her win," Ethan protested with a grin, taking a long sip of the lemonade. "She’s a natural athlete. Just like her mother."

Claire laughed, her hazel eyes sparkling in the spring sunlight.

It had been six months since Viktor Vance was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison, since the board purge permanently reformed Northstar Systems, and since Claire and Ethan crossed the invisible line from colleagues to partners.

Three months ago, in a quiet, intimate ceremony overlooking the Chicago skyline, Claire Bennett and Ethan Miller had exchanged vows, officially blending their lives, their futures, and their family. Lily had stood proudly as the maid of honor, wearing a matching ivory dress and holding a bouquet of daisies.

"Penny for your thoughts, CEO Bennett?" Ethan asked softly, leaning over to press a tender kiss to the top of her head.

Claire leaned her head against his shoulder, her hand sliding into his calloused palm, interlocking their fingers.

"I was just thinking about that Monday morning," Claire murmured, gazing out across the lawn where Lily was now attempting to teach the golden retriever how to sit. "If you hadn't stood up to Derek Sloan... if you hadn't defended the helpless intern in the thrift-store blazer..."

"Then I would have missed out on meeting the most extraordinary woman in the world," Ethan finished for her, turning to look into her hazel eyes with unyielding devotion.

Claire smiled, raising her glass in a quiet toast. "To thrift-store blazers, scuffed flats, and finding courage where you least expect it."

May you like

"To happily ever after," Ethan whispered, pressing his lips to hers as the warm spring breeze rustled through the oak trees overhead, sealing their story in a perfect, golden moment of love, peace, and eternal beginning.
