Chapter 9 - Blood at the Harbor Estate

Peace in the underworld, however, is never granted without one final, desperate gasp from the dying serpent.

At 4:00 PM the following afternoon, the storm had finally cleared, leaving Boston coated in a thin sheet of glittering winter frost. The harbor estate was operating under standard perimeter security, the emergency tactical alert downgraded as the syndicates fell in line behind Lorenzo’s absolute victory.

Lorenzo was in the grand library on the second floor, finalizing the transfer of the Vane family’s seized harbor leases into a trust fund established for Elena and Mia, when the estate’s internal alarm suddenly shrieked.

A red strobe flashed violently above the library doors.

Lorenzo was on his feet in half a second, his Kimber .45 clearing his holster with instinctive speed. He slammed his hand against the desk intercom. "Rocco! Report!"

Static hissed through the speaker, followed by the sound of rapid, suppressed gunfire echoing from the estate’s lower service tunnels.

"Lorenzo!" Rocco’s voice came through, strained and breathless. "It’s a rogue hit! Not Moretti! It’s Julian Vane’s private security contractors—six men using the old maintenance sewer line beneath the boat house! They’re not trying to take the house, Lorenzo—they’re a suicide squad! They know they’re going to federal prison, and they’re trying to burn the estate down from the inside!"

Lorenzo’s blood turned to liquid ice. "Where is Elena?!"

"She was taking Mia to the conservatory to pick winter roses for Sophia!" Rocco shouted over the gunfire. "Two shooters breached the south glass corridor! I’m three minutes out—"

"Seal the east wing!" Lorenzo roared into the mic. "I’m going to the conservatory!"

Lorenzo sprinted out of the library, bypassing the elevators, taking the grand marble staircase four steps at a time. The sound of shattered glass and screaming tore through the lower level.

Down in the conservatory, the tropical paradise had become a war zone.

Two men in black tactical gear and balaclavas had kicked through the reinforced glass doors connecting to the service tunnels. One of them held an automatic shotgun, sweeping the lush greenery, while the other carried an incendiary canister, splashing gasoline across the antique wicker furniture and wooden pathways.

"Find the girl!" the man with the shotgun barked, his voice muffled by his mask. "Vane said burn the whole damn place, but take the kid’s body as proof!"

Behind a dense thicket of tall fiddle-leaf figs and stone decorative boulders, Elena was crouched on the wet soil, her body curled completely over Mia.

Mia was trembling violently, her little hands clamped over her ears, tears streaming down her red cheeks, but she didn't scream. She remembered what Lorenzo had told her: *Stay quiet. Stay brave.*

"Mommy..." Mia whimpered in a tiny whisper.

"Shh, baby, look at Mommy," Elena whispered frantically, her voice shaking with terror, but her eyes burning with a feral, maternal fury. She looked down at the stone floor. Her fingers found a heavy, jagged piece of slate that had broken off the garden border. She gripped it with white knuckles.

If these men found them, they would have to kill her first.

The heavy thud of combat boots approached the foliage.

"Over here," the shooter with the shotgun muttered, kicking a large terracotta planter aside, shattering it into pieces. He leveled his weapon, his gloved hand reaching out to pull back the large fig leaves shielding the corner.

Elena raised the slate, ready to drive it into the man’s throat with everything she had.

*BANG!*

The sound of the shot was deafening inside the glass atrium.

The shooter’s head snapped back violently, his shotgun flying from his grip as his body collapsed backward into the shallow koi pond, water splashing violently across the stone path, turning pink with blood.

The second gunman spun around, dropping the gasoline canister, raising his sidearm toward the entrance.

*BANG! BANG!*

Two hollow-point rounds punched through the center of his chest. The gunman gasped, staggering back two steps before collapsing lifelessly onto the wet floorboards.

Lorenzo stepped through the shattered glass entryway.

He was holding his Kimber in a two-handed tactical grip, the barrel smoking in the cold air. His face was a mask of absolute, unholy slaughter, his eyes burning with a fury that could have leveled a city. He swept the room in three seconds, verifying no other hostiles were standing.

"Elena!" he roared.

"Lorenzo!"

Elena burst from the thicket of trees, scrambling onto the stone path.

Lorenzo holstered his weapon in a single fluid motion and caught her as she threw herself into his arms. He lifted her off her feet, crushing her against his chest, his large hands frantically checking her shoulders, her arms, her face.

"Are you hit? Did they touch you?!" he demanded, his voice ragged, raw, and desperate.

"No! No, we’re okay!" Elena wept, clutching his face in her trembling hands. "Mia is safe! She’s right there!"

Lorenzo turned, dropping to his knees, scooping Mia up with his other arm. The little girl buried her face in his neck, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Mr. Enzo!" she cried. "Loud noises! Too loud!"

"I know, baby, I know," Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking as he pulled both of them into an iron embrace, his body shaking with the delayed shock of almost losing everything that mattered in this world. "It’s over. The loud noises are gone. I’ve got you. I’ve got both of you."

Rocco and four heavily armed guards sprinted into the conservatory, their rifles raised, but stopped dead at the sight before them.

The dead assassins lay in pools of water and blood among the tropical ferns. And in the center of the carnage, the most feared mafia don in the history of Boston was kneeling in the dirt, weeping silent, burning tears of relief into the chestnut hair of a former maid and her daughter.

Rocco slowly lowered his rifle. He looked at the guards, making a sharp gesture with his hand. "Clear the bodies. Lock down the perimeter. And leave them alone."

Lorenzo didn't hear them leave. He didn't care about the blood on his hands or the smoke in the air.

He pulled back slightly, looking into Elena’s tear-streaked face.

"Marry me," Lorenzo said.

The words were not polished. There were no diamonds, no high-society invitations, no strategic political alliances. There was only a man who had faced the abyss and realized that without this woman, his empire was an empty grave.

Elena froze, her hazel eyes widening in sheer, breathless shock. "Lorenzo... what?"

"Marry me, Elena," Lorenzo repeated, his voice absolute, steady, and vibrating with an ancient, unbreakable devotion. "Not for the press. Not for my mother. For me. Because I love you. Because from the moment you walked into this house, you were the only thing that kept me human."

Elena looked at him—at the lethal protector, the tender father figure, the man who had torn down a three-hundred-year-old dynasty just to keep a toddler safe.

She let out a broken, radiant laugh through her tears, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in his throat.

May you like

"Yes," she whispered, her voice echoing off the glass ceiling into the clearing sky above. "Yes, Lorenzo. A thousand times, yes."
