Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Corridor

Before we could finalize the emergency filings, my phone buzzed violently on the table. It was a local call from the resort concierge desk.
"Mrs. Vance?" the clerk’s voice sounded nervous, strained. "Mr. Landon Vance is currently at the south elevator bank demanding security access to your private suite. He states that you have illegally confiscated his corporate laptop and vehicle keys. He is threatening to involve local law enforcement if you do not meet him immediately."
I looked across the table at Sloane. She gave me a single, resolute nod.
"Tell Mr. Vance," I said into the receiver, "that I will meet him in the mezzanine atrium in five minutes."
When I stepped out of the private conference room, Landon was already pacing near the marble fountain, his custom Italian suit rumpled from an obvious lack of sleep, his hair uncharacteristically disheveled. The smooth, charming mask he wore for society had cracked, revealing the raw, frantic animal beneath.
"Harper!" he hissed, charging toward me the second he saw me. He caught himself just short of grabbing my arm, conscious of the hotel guests milling around the perimeter. "What the hell are you playing at? You locked me out of the house, you took my car keys, and now my corporate debit card is declining at the front desk!"
I stood entirely still, keeping my posture regal, distant, and impenetrable. "Your card was declined because I revoked your authorized user status on all Vance estate credit lines at 6:00 AM."
Landon’s eyes flashed with venomous disbelief. "You did what? Harper, are you insane? I have the biggest presentation of my career in less than two hours! Do you have any idea what kind of bridge financing I need to show on my books this morning? If those investors run a credit check and see a frozen account, you will ruin everything I’ve built!"
"Everything *you've* built?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Or everything you stole from my father’s legacy and forged in my name?"
His face drained of color for a fraction of a second, but his narcissism quickly recovered, twisting into a patronizing sneer. "Oh, please. Don't tell me you believed whatever hysterical nonsense Sloane told you last night. She’s an aggressive, vindictive corporate shark, Harper! She threw herself at me, and when I rejected her advances to protect our marriage, she threatened to fabricate financial fraud to destroy me! I only took her out to dinner to diffuse her blackmail!"
"Is that right?"
A sharp, resonant voice cut through the air behind him.
Landon froze. He turned around slowly, his spine going rigid as Sloane stepped out from behind the marble pillars, flanked by Martin Vance and two uniformed private security officers from the resort.
"S-Sloane..." Landon stammered, his confident facade shattering instantly. "Wait, this isn't what it looks like. I was just—"
"Save it, Landon," Sloane said, walking toward him with the measured cadence of an executioner. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the nine-thousand-dollar diamond tennis bracelet, and tossed it into the fountain with a clean splash. "Your nine-hundred-dollar-an-hour defense attorney won't even be able to save you from what’s coming. Martin has already served your firm with an immediate notice of civil forfeiture and unauthorized fund diversion."

Landon backed up until his heels hit the fountain ledge, his chest heaving. "You two are teaming up? You're listening to her, Harper? We’ve been married twelve years! I loved you!"
"You loved my father’s trust fund," I said, looking into the eyes of the man I had shared a bed with for over a decade and feeling nothing but absolute detachment. "And you have ninety minutes left before the world finds out what you really are."
