Chapter 8 - The Fall of Vivian Cole

By Friday afternoon, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed and finality.

The executive boardroom of Sterling & Croft Financial was silent as Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the long mahogany table. Surrounding him were the firm’s equity partners and Julian Ward, who had spent the last seventy-two hours leading the forensic audit.

Ethan was not invited to the meeting. He had been barred from entering the building by private security that morning.

“The evidence is conclusive,” Julian said, sliding a comprehensive summary across to Arthur. “Ethan Shaw systematically misused firm retainers totaling over four hundred thousand dollars to subsidize Cole PR & Lifestyle without proper client authorization. Furthermore, Claire Bennett’s legal counsel has made it clear: if the firm attempts to shield Ethan or fight the restitution of marital assets, Vance & Associates will file a public fraud suit naming Sterling & Croft as a co-defendant.”

Arthur Sterling didn't even look at the other partners. He closed the folder with a deliberate, heavy snap.

“Call the vote,” Arthur said, his voice cold as granite. “Removal of Ethan Shaw from the partnership, effective immediately, with total forfeiture of equity units to satisfy internal liabilities.”

Every single hand at the table went up.

Ethan Shaw’s decade-long career was terminated in less than forty seconds.

Across town, a far uglier drama was playing out in the arts district.

Vivian Cole arrived at her boutique PR agency to find the front doors locked with heavy steel chains and an official notice from the county sheriff’s office posted on the glass.

*SEIZED UNDER COURT ORDER: ASSETS ATTACHED PENDING LITIGATION.*

Vivian beat her fists against the glass, her screams drawing the attention of nearby pedestrians and shop owners. “Let me in! This is my business! You can’t do this!”

A luxury black town car pulled up to the curb. Margaret Shaw stepped out, leaning heavily on her pearl-handled cane. Margaret’s face was pinched, pale, and ravaged by the humiliation of the past week.

Vivian spun around, her eyes wild. “Margaret! Thank God! Look what they did! Claire’s lawyers chained my doors! You have to give me the money to pay the court bond! You have to write a check right now!”

Margaret looked at Vivian. For years, Margaret had showered Vivian with praise, viewing her as the daughter she never had—a glamorous, agreeable young woman who stroked Margaret’s vanity while keeping that cold, independent Claire in her place.

Now, Margaret saw Vivian through the lens of absolute ruin.

“Write you a check?” Margaret asked, her voice trembling with aristocratic fury. “You ungrateful, scheming little leech. Do you know what Ethan just told me? He told me everything. He told me how you blackmailed him, how you demanded money every time you threatened to tell Claire about your little hotel rendezvous!”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed into slits, shedding the last remnants of her fragile facade. “He gave me that money willingly, you old fool! He gave it to me because he was obsessed with me! Because your golden boy couldn't stand the fact that I didn't want him exclusively! He bought my time because his own wife couldn't stand to look at his pathetic face!”

*Slap.*

The sound of Margaret’s gloved hand striking Vivian’s cheek cracked through the street like a whip.

Vivian staggered back, clutching her stinging face, her eyes wide with shock. “You hit me!”

“I took you into my home,” Margaret spat, her aristocratic poise dissolving into pure hatred. “I treated you like my own blood. I defended you to the entire city while my son’s marriage collapsed. And you have ruined him. You have ruined our family name. Sterling & Croft fired him today. We are the laughingstock of every country club from here to Boston.”

“Ethan was weak!” Vivian screamed, her voice cracking as passersby began filming the altercation with their phones. “He was a coward! He used me just as much as I used him! Don't you dare come here and play the grand dame with me, Margaret! Your son is a loser, and now he’s a broke loser! Get away from me!”

Margaret looked at Vivian with utter contempt, then turned back toward her town car without another word. She climbed into the back seat, the door slamming shut, leaving Vivian standing alone on the sidewalk beneath the locked chains of her ruined agency, surrounded by the flashing cameras of strangers.

Within forty-eight hours, Vivian’s remaining clients fled. Her landlord terminated her lease. The court froze her personal bank accounts to secure the restitution of Claire’s marital funds.

The glittering socialite who had spent years manipulating Claire’s life from the shadows was completely, publicly destroyed. She had wanted Ethan’s adoration, his money, and Claire’s place in society.

Instead, she was left with nothing but court summonses, debts she could never repay, and a reputation so toxic that not even the cheapest PR firm in the city would take her calls.
