Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail

For seventy-two hours, Emily Thomas disappeared.

She didn't answer her phone. She didn't check LinkedIn. She sat in her Brookline condo, wrapped in an oversized knit sweater, surrounded by empty coffee mugs, take-out cartons, and four laptops humming on her dining room table.

Rachel sat across from her, surrounded by piles of printed corporate filings.

“He hasn't accepted your resignation,” Rachel said quietly, scrolling through the financial news on her tablet. “Cole Meridian released a statement yesterday saying you were on ‘temporary personal leave.’ Richard Sterling hasn't leaked the photos yet.”

Emily didn't look up from her screen. Her eyes were rimmed with red, but behind the exhaustion burned a cold, diamond-hard focus.

“Richard hasn't leaked the photos because he’s waiting for the annual trustee meeting tomorrow morning,” Emily murmured, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. “He wants to drop the dossier directly into the lap of the board during the executive vote. That way, Julian cannot preempt it with a public statement.”

“And what are you doing?” Rachel asked, looking at the complex data scraping software running on Emily’s screens.

Emily took a sip of cold black coffee. “I am doing what I do best. I’m finding where the foundation cracks.”

When Emily had handed Julian the file on Richard’s offshore Cayman accounts, she had only seen the surface. Over the last three days, working with forensic data leaked to her by an old colleague at the SEC, Emily had uncovered something far more sinister.

Richard Sterling was not working alone.

The private credit funds he was using to engineer *Project Aegis* were funded by an offshore syndicate controlled by… Victoria Vance.

Victoria had orchestrated the entire hostile takeover from the shadows. She had funded Richard’s speculative AI acquisitions, designed the debt traps to trigger an artificial default, and planned to use the resulting liquidity crisis—alongside the personal scandal—to force Julian out of the Chairman’s seat and liquidate Cole Meridian’s sixty-billion-dollar portfolio to an overseas conglomerate.

They weren't just trying to destroy Emily’s career.

They were gutting Julian’s family heritage from the inside out.

At 3:00 AM on Thursday morning—the morning of the trustee assembly—Emily found the smoking gun.

A series of signed transfer orders routed through a private Swiss banking portal, timestamped four days prior, linking Victoria Vance’s private trust directly to the private investigative firm that had photographed Emily and Julian in the park.

Attached to the file was an audio recording: Richard Sterling confirming to Victoria that the smear campaign would be deployed precisely at 9:15 AM, immediately following Julian’s opening address.

Emily closed the laptop with a sharp, decisive snap.

She stood up, walked into the bathroom, and looked in the mirror.

Her thirty-fifth birthday was in exactly one week.

She washed her face with ice water, brushed her hair, and pulled her sharpest black suit from the closet.

“Rachel,” Emily called into the living room.

“Yeah?”

“Call a car. We’re going to the 40th floor.”
