Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master Revealed

The room was so quiet you could hear the soft whir of the projector cooling down against the ceiling.

Richard’s gaze swung between me and Arthur Vance like an animal caught in a ring of headlights. His hands were shaking visibly now; he shoved them into his pockets to hide the tremor, but his shoulders remained hunched, defensive, broken.

“Federal prison?” Evelyn Reed asked, her eyes narrowing as she flipped open the first blue-bound dossier Nora had provided. “Julianna, explain that statement immediately.”

“With pleasure, Evelyn,” I replied, nodding to Nora.

Nora tapped her tablet, and the massive video wall behind Richard—the same type of wall that had displayed his humiliation four hours earlier—flickered to life. But instead of an ultrasound, it displayed a detailed forensic schematic of a shell company named *Aegis Maritime Logistics*, registered in George Town, Grand Cayman.

“In November of 2022,” I began, my voice clear, steady, and projecting effortlessly across the room, “Vanguard Holdings reported an eight percent margin growth in our logistics division. That announcement drove our stock to an all-time high, allowing Richard to sell sixty million dollars of his personal equity to fund his private jet and the purchase of the penthouse he currently shares with Ms. Bennett.”

Richard took a step toward the screen, his face contorted. “Those were legitimate offshore asset reorganizations! The external auditors signed off on them!”

“They signed off on what you showed them, Richard,” I countered, not even looking at him. “They didn't see the secondary transfer ledger. Aegis Maritime didn't own any ships. It didn't own any containers. It was a paper corporation created to absorb forty-two million dollars in operational fuel losses that Vanguard couldn't afford to report before the annual debt refinancing.”

Evelyn Reed’s breath caught in her throat. Her fingers paused on the page. “These invoices... they’re signed by Richard personally.”

“They are,” I said. “And the counter-signature belongs to Chloe Bennett’s brother, Donald Bennett, who has served as the nominal director of Aegis Maritime for the past eighteen months while collecting a sixty-thousand-dollar monthly consulting retainer from Vanguard’s discretionary marketing budget.”

The entire boardroom turned their eyes toward Richard.

The betrayal wasn't just corporate; it was pathetic. He had believed he was a master of the universe, juggling a loyal wife who quietly kept his business from crumbling while keeping a glamorous young mistress who adored his power. In reality, he had been the mark. Chloe and her family had methodically woven themselves into the fabric of his illegal balance sheets, using his own greed and vanity as the rope to hang him.

“You see, Richard,” I continued, finally looking up to meet his haunted, hollow eyes. “Chloe didn't just target your marriage. She targeted your vulnerabilities. She knew about Aegis Maritime because you bragged to her about how clever you were to outsmart the SEC. She got her brother onto the payroll, she got Marcus Vance to handle the legal insulation, and then she got pregnant.”

“Whose baby is it?” Richard asked, his voice cracking, reduced to a pathetic squeak. The question seemed to slip out of him without his permission, the raw, bleeding wound of his masculinity exposed before the very board members he had ruled with an iron fist.

I let the question hang in the air for a long moment.

“Does it matter?” I asked softly. “It isn't yours. That was the only variable that mattered to you this morning, wasn't it? When you signed that check and let her toss it at me across the conference table, telling me that Matthew and Lily were only going to complicate your new life. You were so eager to build an empire for a child who didn't share an ounce of your blood, while the two children who carried your name were waiting in the hallway with their backpacks.”

“Julianna, please,” he choked out, taking half a step toward me, his hands emerging from his pockets, palms up in a posture of complete surrender. “We can fix this. You know the numbers better than anyone. If we restate the earnings now... if we cooperate with the regulators... we can save the company. We can save Vanguard.”

“*I* am going to save Vanguard,” I said, standing up from my chair and buttoning my jacket. “You, Richard, are going to resign.”

Arthur Vance closed his dossier with a decisive, heavy thud that sounded like a gavel falling.

“The board will now entertain a motion,” Arthur said, his eyes fixed firmly on the quartz table, refusing to look at his godson. “To immediately suspend Richard Sterling as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Vanguard Holdings, pending a formal forensic inquiry into the Aegis Maritime transactions.”

“Seconded,” Evelyn Reed said instantly.

“All in favor?” Arthur asked.

Eight hands went up around the table.

Richard stood alone at the front of the room, his mouth open, his world crumbling into dust while the sirens on the street below grew steadily louder.
