Chapter 11 - The Wall of Brass

The Pacific Fleet Flag Officers Conference was held in the grand auditorium of the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Waikiki. Outside, the palm trees swayed violently in fifty-knot gale winds; inside, the room was a glittering sea of gold braid, medals, and white choker uniforms.

More than two hundred admirals, generals, foreign naval attachés, and five United States Senators were gathered for what was supposed to be a triumphant presentation on next-generation undersea warfare.

At 0855, Rear Admiral Paul Sterling took the stage. His uniform was immaculate. His confidence was unshakeable. On the massive display screens behind him, high-resolution renders of Trident Global Dynamics’ deep-sea submersible apparatus flashed with corporate slogans: *Dominance through Innovation.*

"Ladies and gentlemen," Sterling’s voice echoed authoritatively through the state-of-the-art sound system. "The future of naval readiness does not wait for bureaucratic timidity. What our brave young men and women sacrifice in the dark waters of the Pacific guarantees the security of the free world..."

The heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open with a thunderous bang.

Every head turned.

Walking down the center aisle, in pristine Service Dress Blue uniforms, were Vice Admiral Mercer, myself, Agent Lin, Petty Officer Reed, and Corpsman Santos. Escorting us was a detachment of sixteen Master-at-Arms with sidearms drawn and badges gleaming.

"What is the meaning of this interruption?" a four-star admiral on the front row barked, rising to his feet. "Commander Avery, you are under administrative suspension!"

"Not anymore, Admiral," Mercer’s voice boomed across the auditorium with the raw thunder of a carrier commander. "Under emergency authority granted by the Secretary of Defense, this conference is now a convened court-martial inquiry."

Sterling froze at the podium. For the first time, his icy blue eyes betrayed a flicker of raw, unadulterated panic.

"Cut their microphones!" Sterling shouted to the audiovisual booth. "Security, remove these officers from the floor!"

"Don't touch those switches," Reed announced loudly, lifting a tactical transmitter. "Because we already hijacked the broadcast feed."
