Chapter 10 - Cracks in the Citadel

Within ten minutes, the atrium had been transformed into an active federal crime scene.
Senator Jonathan Sterling was not escorted out through a private VIP exit. He was handcuffed with standard steel cuffs behind his back, read his Miranda rights in full view of the national press corps, and led down the marble steps into a waiting FBI transport van.
The footage of the mighty Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee being marched past his own press room became the top trending topic on every digital platform within seconds. The narrative of the “Pentagon Cafeteria Analyst” had detonated across the internet, transforming from an internal bureaucratic rumor into a national sensation.
Back inside the secure conference room on the second floor, Caldwell, Miller, and I stood around a folding table while federal agents cataloged the physical evidence seized from Sterling’s office.
“That was risky, Doctor,” Caldwell said, though a rare, approving grin touched the corners of his mouth as he poured two cups of black coffee from a thermal carafe. “Calling him out on live television like that.”
“The only way to kill a creature that lives in the shadows,” I said, taking a sip of the bitter coffee, “is to drag it out into broad daylight.”
“Indeed,” Caldwell replied. “The Attorney General has already convened an emergency grand jury. The Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader just issued a joint statement stripping Sterling of every committee assignment and demanding his immediate resignation.”
Captain Miller stepped in, his phone pressed to his ear. He listened for a few seconds, his eyes growing wide, before tapping the speaker button.
“Doctor Mercer, General,” Miller said, breathing heavily. “The FBI raid on Apex Tactical’s headquarters in Tysons Corner just concluded. They broke into the CEO’s safe.”
“What did they find?” I asked, setting down my paper cup.
“It's worse than we thought,” Miller said, his voice dropping into a solemn hush. “Apex wasn't just shipping defective chips to our drone wings. They were selling the complete blueprint architecture of the next-generation autonomous combat network—Project Chimera—to an international broker operating out of Geneva.”
Caldwell’s face darkened instantly. “Project Chimera is the central nervous system for every fifth-generation fighter and unmanned carrier in our arsenal. Who was the broker?”

“The broker wasn't an arms dealer,” Miller answered, looking directly at me. “The broker was an account controlled by Colonel Vance’s former chief of staff. And according to the shipping manifests, the primary decryption keys were transferred forty-eight hours ago.”
