Chapter 8 - The Shattered Mirror

"Step away from him!" Cynthia shrieked, breaking through her shock. She grabbed Stefan by the coat collar, dragging him backward toward the jet stairs. "Stefan, get inside right now! She is crazy! She’s a dangerous woman!"

"Mom, let go! You're hurting me!" Stefan cried, wriggling against her grip.

"I am your mother!" Cynthia screamed, her voice bordering on madness. "I raised you! I gave you everything! You are a Vance!"

Suddenly, the night was flooded with brilliant, blinding light.

High-powered searchlights mounted on four black SUVs illuminated the tarmac, blinding the guards and the flight crew. The deafening wail of federal sirens cut through the roar of the jet engines.

Over a megaphone, an authoritative voice boomed: *"This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Shut down the aircraft engines immediately. All security personnel, drop your weapons and step away from the vehicles. Cynthia Vance, step away from the child."*

Julian had come through.

The security guards immediately raised their hands, backing away. The pilots in the Gulfstream cut the engines, the whining turbines winding down into a dying hum.

Cynthia stood frozen at the base of the stairs, the rain soaking her hair, her manicured life collapsing around her in real-time. Stefan broke free from her frozen grip and ran—not toward the plane, not toward Cynthia, but straight toward me.

I caught him in my arms, pulling him hard against my chest. His small body was shaking, soaking wet, but he clung to my neck with an instinct that defied eight years of separation. A mother’s scent, a mother’s heartbeat—some things are burned into the soul of a child, untouched by time, untouched by lies.

Mark lay on the tarmac a few yards away, hands cuffed behind his back by an FBI agent. He looked over at me, his face bruised, blood mixing with the rainwater on his cheek.

"I'm sorry, Elena," he choked out, his voice drowned by the sirens. "I'm so sorry."

I didn't answer him. I didn't look at him again. I buried my face in Stefan’s wet hair, kissing his temple right over that tiny, familiar birthmark, weeping tears of unquantifiable relief.

"You're safe," I whispered into his ear. "I've got you. Mommy's got you."
