Chapter 8 - Recovery and Reckoning

The surgery lasted four hours.

When the lead trauma surgeon finally stepped out of the double doors, he looked exhausted, wiping his brow with a paper towel.

"Are you family?" he asked, looking at my uniform.

"Her brother," I said. "How is she?"

"She's stable, Captain, but it was a close call," the surgeon said soberly. "Severe concussion, cranial swelling, and significant blood loss. She’s going to need weeks of neurological monitoring and physical rehabilitation. But she's going to survive."

I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath that purged months of accumulated tension from my chest. "Thank you, Doctor."

When I walked into her hospital room an hour later, Sylvia was awake. She looked pale, fragile, stripped of all the designer labels, the arrogant smirks, and the high-society posturing. Her eyes turned slowly toward the door as I walked in, resting on my uniform. Tears welled up instantly in her eyes, spilling over her lashes.

She didn't speak. She just looked at me with a mixture of shame, fear, and profound regret.

I pulled a chair up beside the hospital bed, sat down, and rested my hands on my knees. I didn't gloat. I didn't say I told you so. I just looked at her with the steady, unyielding calm of a brother who had finally closed the distance.

"Jonah is gone," I said quietly. "Federal marshals picked him up in the hospital lobby on warrants related to wire fraud, asset concealment, and corporate embezzlement. He's not coming back, Sylvia."

Sylvia covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking as silent, broken sobs wracked her body. "I ruined everything, Carver," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "I ruined my life... and I tried to destroy yours."

"You made bad bets," I replied softly, reaching out to place a steady, calloused hand over her trembling fingers. "You let a fraud convince you that image was worth more than integrity. But you're alive. And life gives you a chance to reset the baseline."

She looked up, her tear-stained eyes locking onto mine with raw vulnerability. "Can we... can we start over?"

"We can," I said, offering a small, reassuring nod. "Step by step. But the fake life is over, Sylvia. From here on out, we build on solid ground."
