Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Winter arrived early in upstate New York, blanketing the pine forests and dirt roads in a thick layer of pristine, untouched white snow. The wood stove in our cabin burned hot and steady, filling the rooms with a cozy, comforting heat that chased away the bitter mountain chill.

Dad and I had spent the last few weeks repairing the porch, chopping firewood, and getting the old Ford F-150 ready for the heavy snowstorms ahead. The truck started on the first turn of every morning, its rusted engine humming with stubborn, reliable strength.

One crisp December morning, I walked out onto the front porch with a steaming mug of black coffee in my hand. The snow stretched out endlessly across the valley, glittering brilliantly under the pale morning sun. Not a single footprint marred the white expanse of our driveway. It was a blank slate—a completely secure perimeter ready for whatever came next.

My phone chimed softly in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw an encrypted message from Jackson: All accounts stable. Vanguard Foundation is officially fully funded and operational. Over ten thousand veterans and workers secured for life. Enjoy your retirement, Captain.

I smiled, typing back a short, simple reply: Standing down. Good work, soldier.

I locked the phone and slid it back into my pocket, watching the steam rise from my coffee mug into the crisp winter air.
